Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I swore I would not do chicken. I wouldn't. I wouldn't. Then I did. I'm not hatching any but my husband should (unless we have to reschedule for tomorrow) be picking up the chicks tonight. 4 Buff Orps and 2 Black Copper Marans. :D Not many I know- testing the waters. Still want to do turkeys a ways down the road! :D
Congrats on going down the chicken path! BCM are a gorgeous breed!

What kind do you want?
not really picky about the kinds, would like good layers and colorful. i may be picking up some duckling locally in a couple weeks i am going to check out their farm this weekend or early next week and they are due to hatch in 2 weeks @ $5 a baby i might just do that! and hubby offered to buy them for me because he felt so bad i had such a crap week and then all but 2 of my ducks dissapeared!
Feel better soon! I get recurrent ear infections everytime the weather changes. Starts like allrgy symptoms and the next thing I'm dizzy and unbalanced.

Hey all! I've been busy the last few days dealing with...

I've got all kinds of craziness going on that I don't even want to talk about.

But I will share my sad story from this morning. We have three duck mommas where I work. One of them lost all but one baby to predators last week. So runner mom has one baby, scovy mom 1 has two babies and scovy mom 2 has 9 babies.

Today, I was in the farmhouse getting some info from my boss when one of the fieldhands brings in a soaking wet, almost dead duckling. I take the little thing, dry it with a paper towel and stick it down my shirt for warmth. About 15 minutes later, still waiting for my paperwork, fieldhands return with another soaking wet, nearly dead duckling. Dried it off a bit, into the shirt. Now I have two nearly dead ducklings warming in my boobies.

All previously-counted ducklings accounted for. Brooder ducklings all accounted for. Tractor ducklings accounted for. There is nowhere these babies might have come from.

Long story short, boss ran out and got Sav-a-chick. Pulled back into the driveway as duckling 2 expired in my hands. Duckling one lasted about a half hour longer, but also died on me. Both of them were stargazing. Guess whomever hatched them left them for dead because they couldn't keep up. Still don't know where they came from. I wonder if they were hatched by a chicken or something. Either way, my day got off to a really sad start trying to save those poor babies.

On a good note, I have two new runner ducklings and it looks like I may get 3 of 5 of the exotic chicken eggs (bonus with silkie duck eggs) to hatch. Maybe more, who knows?

Hey everyone. Hope all is well in birdland today.

Marty, glad you are spending fun time with your babies! It seems they grow up so fast. I'd love to see new pics on your next adventure outside.

Dutch, where are new pics of your dewlaps?????

Quackers, sorry about the awful day with those poor ducklings. Nothing you could have done. But happy to hear about your rare chicken eggs? How long until silkie egg lockdown??

Christine, hope you are doing ok!!

Baking, hope you are feeling better!!
Dutch X 2 and i am getting there thanks

also does anyone have african geese? the place i may be getting duckling will have them and i am just wondering what their temperment is like?

bakin, I have africans. It depends both on quality of the breed and how they are raised. With the exception of my brown/white large african dewlap girl (who is a total DOLL!!!), my africans are louder than my other breeds and my gander has required considerable training and socializing to be safe around strangers. With that said, my gander has tremendous personality and is the one people want to talk to and spend time with. I don't trust him around kids, though.

Bottom line: Unless they are the large dewlap variety, preferably white, I'd probably wait to find a different breed.

Bakin, I am the only one who works around our Africans. Buddy our gander is unpredictable around others, but just verbally complains to me. They live in our pasture, going into their house at night. I would never let them around the 17 month old.

Our Sebastopols are the calmest, next the Dewlap Toulouse, then the Americans and the Production Toulouse. They are all trustworthy around the baby though.

thank you so much for your info! i want geese that will be a pleasure to have and be part of the family, i love the sebbies but they are a bit out of my ability range i think, what is the difference in the different types of toulouse?

Production or utility Toulouse can be found anywhere including hatcheries. True quality Dewlap Toulouse come from breeders, and are very hard to come by as far as quality stock from a knowledgeable breeder. There are less than favorable breeders of the dewlaps out there unfortunately, and the quality of the goslings shows it.
