Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Okay, I'm home........ sorry been out of town getting some dog food. Crazy that you have to drive an hour north just to get your dog food, but my babies have to have a special kind so what do you do

No update on the eggs really, still egg rocking going on just no pips yet. I hope they get started tonight. I was supposed to stop turning tomorrow, so I'm going to quickly set the other eggs out of the tray and then shut that bator back up ASAP. Temp and humidity has been right where it needs to be so it's just a waiting game. Duck eggs take forever to hatch

Just set the other eggs out of the tray and on to their side for lockdown and several of the other eggs are rocking now too. I don't expect anything yet as it's still early, but I will let you guys know how things go.

70% - OMG! I can't beleive that. I would have lost it on her..... seriously she has lost her bloody mind if she thinks her dog is going to calm down in the middle of that.... She had no right to even be in your yard let alone use it as a "training opportunity". Some people just don't get it.

Sympathetic Outrage Achieved. What a LOON!
Yay on the hatch, Miss Utah!! I haven't managed to find the spot where you talk about how many made it but I saw the picture of Caboose - what a cutie!!!! Yay!!!!

That's great news about the goose eggs, QJ!

I have to tell you about what happened yesterday. I had gone up to Sydney to help a person build part of a chicken coop (worked out really well!!!). I got back home yesterday morning from the trip. I backed the car into the carport through the driveway gate. Got out to close the driveway gate when a passing woman's Staffie got away from her and ran in and attacked my ducks who were all out in the yard (this is in the backyard - we are on a corner and the driveway goes into the backyard). It was horrible. I grabbed the dog and Damon (hubby) pulled a duck out of its mouth - miraculously she (the duck) seems fairly ok - just bruising, swelling and missing feathers. I gave the dog to the women and then went inside to get some paper to take her details. After that it got bizarre - the woman would not leave my yard. She was trying to get the dog to sit. I asked her to take the dog out of the yard and she said no, that she needed to "calm the dog". I said "Sure, you need a moment to catch your breath". I waited a short time but she just kept trying to get the dog to sit. The dog wasn't having a bar of it - it was in a frenzy of excitement and trying to get away from her. The women had a poor grip on its flimsy lead and I was very frightened that it'd break free and kill a duck. So I said (polite but firm), ok, you need to take the dog out now. She gave me a filthy look and repeated that she was just calming the dog and was getting it to sit. At that point I semi-lost it and said (at elevated volume) that her dog had attacked a duck and that she had to take it out of my yard right now. Again she refused and just kept saying to the oblivious dog "Sit, good boy, come on, calm down, it's ok, sit, good boy". The dog was still going mental. By this time so was I. I fully lost it and shouted that she 'HAD TO GET THE [insert expletive] OUT NOW". Finally that got her out the gate. Damon went with her to get her info (I stayed behind the gate and went to check the ducks to prevent myself from punching the women in the face). I could hear her complaining that I had yelled at her even though she had been really calm and that she had been unfairly treated when she was (direct quote) "Just trying to use it as a training opportunity for my dog". Unbelievable. Anyway, I've reported it to Dog Control who sent two rangers round almost immediately. They were great. They're going to speak to the woman, who could be fined for the dog attack and also for trespassing (not leaving the property when asked).

Outraged sympathy appreciated.

I'd also be interested in knowing what word you expletively inserted.

Cocoa, I am a dog lover/owner and outraged by that story. People are legally allowed to shoot dogs here if they attack livestock or poultry. I am not saying I believe in the life for a life thing.... But the woman needs to get a clue how serious an offense that was!

And... FYI... We had a total of 8 cayugas (out of 11) and my one and only ancona egg hatch, so 9 adorable duckies in all. :D

Chicken, thanks for the update! Wish I knew about eggs rocking long before ready to hatch. Mine rocked for 7 days before hatching... But I was fretting like a nervous ninny for days thinking they were hatching way too early.

Ok that lady is plumb out of her mind and shouldn't be permitted to be the keeper of anything beyond a fruit fly. No dog ow ER I. Their right mind says calmly, sit, good dog, it's ok. When there dog just attacked another persons pets and is still bouncing like a pogo stick. That's not the time to praise. Idiot she is for sure.

Hope the ducks are all ok, and she stays away from your property.

Hubby let me stay home tonight to recover from little sleep and a long day of travel after getting home so late last night. He took our 13 year old to the awards ceremony for science fair tonight. He took second in Animal Science with a live animal experiment testing temperature during hatch. Very proud of his work, he started this last August.

Waiting for them to get home so we can watch a movie and call it a night.

70 that lady is a NUTJOB. It sounds like she did not have complete control of her dog or the proper leash for her dog. I take my dogs with me almost everywhere but they are also trained to obey what I say on and off leash. My German Shorthair is so well trained that I can put her on a sit stay in the street and have a car drive by her and she will not move. Took a lot of my time and energy but she will do what ever I need or want her to do. If you are going to take a dog out in the public you need to know that you can control your dog under EVERY circumstance. Did she ever apologize for her dog attacking your duck? I hope your duck is ok. and I hope that lady gets a hefty fine.

Thankyou people. You rock. You guys all get it.

QJ, I used a word starting with F. Repeatedly and with feeling. She did not apologise at any point. Why would she - she was the victim! Arrogant, narcissistic beatch. And totally clueless about training a dog - you guys are spot on there.

I meant to paint my coop today but I think I'm gonna just sit here and watch the ducks. They are fine today. The duck that the dog grabbed has a half bald, bruised and swollen wing but it is not broken and she's doing fine. Have given her anti-inflammatories/painkillers. I'm grateful that there were no serious injuries.
