Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Good morning. :)

Love the tattoos, especially SM's horse tat!! I have two myself (both in memory of dogs that have passed)... and a third one designed for my horses, and I plan to have that one done this summer.

Chicken.... any updates?!?!

Celtic, thanks for the info! I have been giving them little bits of chopped up baby spinach and romaine leaf (both organic) since day 3. They love it! I hope that is not too soon. I will try the hardboiled eggs today. I assume chicken eggs are ok. By the way, you forgot to share more details about your son's science project!

I am also happy to report that on day 12 I can see little goosie babies moving clearly in eggs.

Try to limit the spinach as it prevents absorption of calcium in waterfowl. I offer any and all dark leafy greens but spinach.

Son had a very successful weekend, he took 2nd in Animal Science, and wants to expand his project more to see just what extremes are safe to use and still present a hatch rate worth having for gender control. I would need to pull his log book, but his higher temps resulted in lower total number of eggs hatching, but of those that did a higher hen count every time. I asked him to test ducks down the road as well.

Thanks! Fortunately, they only just got their first taste of spinach last night. I will stick with the romaine and not give them any more spinach! Oh... and the hardboiled eggs.... do I remove shells?

The higher temps resulted in more females? There was a thread before on here that talked about higher temps resulting in more males. Hm....

I saw that thread on temps Utah. It was a good one. When I googled I found a whole scientific explanation as to why higher temps could not determine sex in poultry. It was confusing. LOL.

I know I'm excited. We have a second baby now....... it just hatched a few seconds ago. I'm off to the post office to drop off some hatching eggs be back later I'll probably wait till a few more hatch before I take more pics. Got the brooder tub set up for the babies when they are all done hatching. Hatch day is today LOL.

Yay for babies Chicken Crazy!!! What a cutie patootie!

I called my horse and my dog/cat vets this morning to see if they could refer me to a duck vet, so I can establish a relationship now and not when an emergency happens, which they always do with pets at some point. My dog/cat vet did, in fact, have someone for me to call. I talked to the new vet place and got a good vibe from them. So, their contact information is now on my fridge with all my other vets and farrier contacts.

My vets love me, but they think I'm nuts.... but hey.... there's nothing wrong with being prepared, right?
