That's a lot of drakes! I'm glad runner is perking up!

Good morning all!
First little runner duckling has joined the feedstore babies in the brooder. I was terribly worried that it couldn't walk, so I put it in the tupperware in the brooder like I did with flippy chick. Came out of the bathroom to find the little one had escaped and was clumsily running around with the others!
Got 6 more eggs pipped. If they all hatch, it will be 7 of 11. Got two more that look like they might still pip and 2 that I think are dead. I see sloshy in one of the eggs, so I think that one's gone for sure.
So cute watching a runner learn to walk. Not sure if first peep is one of the keepers or not. I have a terrible time with fawn and white. Got 5, 4 were drakes.

The first pair of drakes came from a lady who couldn't keep them. You know the story: too messy, too stinky, WTH did I get myself into? The feed store had told her they were a male/female pair. I got them when they were about 5 weeks old. After having them a week, I finally had to accept that the feed store had been wrong. But still, not bad for a free duck rescue situation. I still send her photos of her boys.

The rest came from the farm in two sets. First 2 were a f&w drakelet and a blue girl. Blue girl is my best duck right now. Unsexed. You know the drill. I got the natural 50/50.

The second set were two f&w from the other broody mama duck. One boy, one girl, also unsexed. Someone had bought the rest of the group and I didn't want to leave them, so I took them home along with the adult blue runner who used to follow me around the farm.

So I have one f&w girl. She's named Molly after her broody mom, also Molly. Thinking some f&w drakes may be leaving soon.

I have a good receipe for duck, if you need it. At our house, if 4 of 5 are boys, odds are great that 3 of 5 are goona be supper.

I'm starting to wonder if my new didgital thermometer has issues. I got it just before the quail eggs were set a month ago, and the ones that hatched came 2 days early. Turkey is 2 days early. I've got it down a degree and a half now, and I hope it helps.

Probobly too late for these two eggs, though. I take nothing for 24 hours when one is out of the shell as a bad sign.

it took mine almost 36 hours from when the first one came out to when the second came out... over 12 hours from the second and i am having to help the other 3 along, the first and second came out without any trouble and the other 3 were shrink wrapped!

even with running hummidity between 70-75%.

Guess what i am trying to say is don't give up on them quite yet

I don't think the color sexing works on Saxonys. It says eye stripes are girls and dark ones are boys. I have 3 dark ones with eye stripes. LOL.

Also egg #8 zipped and then I think died. I can't hear anything or see movement. Now why the heck would it zip and then die? That's dumb.

i dont think colcor sexing works on all strains of the breed.
sometimes it gets lost in the breeding.

and maybe hes just resting?

Runner ducks = no meat on them.

However, if those pekins I just bought end up to be all boys, I may have a smoked duck in my future.
