See that pinkish dot in the middle? That's Woodie, lol. He is growing good. From what I can find, his incubation is about the same as a chickens so he should hatch around the same time as the poults. Wonder if he will grow up thinking he is a turkey. Should put him and a few poults under a broodie silkie, really confuse them all.

If only my quail would lay so I could add a few of those to hatch with them.

I can just hear it now. a woodcock name WOODY! LMBO. Seriously, I'm so excited your hatching a baby. I felt exotic w/ring neck pheasants! I hope he hatches great, and I think the silky would definately be a great mama for him. I hope he or she brings more woodcocks to your area. I didn't even know they were around here, or over there by you. I think you have more hills and trees naturally.

I sure hope he hatches!! I'm so happy you saved him.

Two boxes of eggs going out today, hubby will try working half a day today, and more eggs hatching around here.

Someone asked about poopy butt. In chicks they get a warm water bath under running water then the fuzz trimmed. Adult hens sometimes also need a trim.
She has a mild bumble foot case, but hasn't skipped a day of laying. Whats bumble foot?
Love all of the garden talk. Tomatoes are a challenge here with our heat as is lettuce, but I plant them anyways. It gets very warm and humid here in Kansas in summer and early fall. I can only grow briefly spring and fall. I've tried some heat-resistant varieties, but not with much luck, unless I grow in shade on the north side. I find the Yellow Pear (my favorite tomatoe) and the piink brandywine (another big favorite) and mr. stripey (tasty) all do well, but require extra cool mulch, but have to be water rationed to avoid splits. They are the only tomatoes that happily make it through 95+ degree heat for weeks. (Up to 108* so far) If you havn't tried those varieties, they may work for you. I suppose they'd like your sandy soil, but may need more water. I have loamy clay here.
Going to build an arbor to set grapes on, should provide great shade when they climb across theI
I wish grapes like it here. They grow, but don't taste good since it doesnt' get cool here at night until about a week before frost.

Thank you for this great advice. I think we can find them somewhere close. We have done all the things you have listed: baked eggs, hollow eggs, not fertile. We recently bought a new incubator and are doing our first batch of chicken/ducks in it. So maybe quail later in the summer. Thanks again. Tracy

Good luck!

morning update. both babies are still fighting. and i will fight with tthem as long as they will.
both are sshrink wrapped (just my luck)
so i will slowly work my way down their shell.
stopping when i see blood.
ducky #1 is wanting out so bad. when he hears me he starts peeping for help and i think everytime i help him its gives him new hope to keep fighting.
the other duck does not make a sound just tries to make progress. i almost have his head free, the way his membrane is as long as these veins recede enough just a little slip and his head will b free. he looks like a magpie i think. they prolly oth will be they have the same color beak..as for the other eggs. .no change. no dipped air cells. can still c veins so maybe i have late bloomers. but im not holding my breath on them.

I'm glad they're fighting so hard. I hope they make grreat progress soon, I know its hard for you.

Come on babies!!!

Good morning All!

ok this is very slow going.
i can barely peel any membrane away yet.
the next go at it i will be able to get baby #2 s head out. i can almost do it but the membrane is holding him back.
both are very glad for the help and peep softly at me.

they both willingly took some save-a chick which is good lol. they prolly wondered what the heck i was doing.
hopefully it gives them some strength.

Shipped eggs are the reason I need a gold margarita.  I had a shot of Tequila earlier....

Heres my recipe.......  Easiest in the world to make.... fill a TALL glass with chopped ice, add 2 pinches of margarita salt, twist lid, lift bottle, pour into tall glass, give a swirl and drink it down  :lau

I am so incredibly excited right now!! I finally had the nerve to candle my duck eggs at the end of day 28. I had not heard any sounds or seen movement after 28 days.  My hope was really fading away and  I was very nervous about seeing what was happening inside the eggs. The mallard egg's air sack had more than doubled in size and I could hear a kind of chewing sound inside!! I really hope that the little baby is going to make it out of it's shell. My crested egg still has another day before it's due to hatch. I could not hear noises or see any difference in its development. My Welsh Harlequin seems a little underdeveloped. I feel confident that my mallard has a chance.  I finally have a little glimmer of hope that atleast one  baby may have an opportunity  to hatch in the next day or two:)

I enter our tomatoes in tomatoe tasting contests.  My folks are and were organic gardeners, and so am I.  I raise every color of brandywine, cherokee purple, big rainbow, parks whopper, mortage lifter, and my favorite grape tomatoe ever - amish yellow pear.  :drool     Pink catface and purple tomatoes are just beyond delicious, but so thin skinned that one must simply grow them.  Yeah,  could start and tomatoe chat.  Maybe we could discuss which poultry tastes best with each variety.

oh yummy i can't wait for tomato growing time :love :ya i would join the tomato group!

Its 2:30 am woke up to check the little ones. No progress on te ext pippers. So i opened the bator flashlight in hand. Both stilll working hard. So i chippped shell away up to where they were workin from my ext pip. Both appaer ok very lively.

:fl

Our first duck has pipped :weee !  So now just waiting :pop !  Tracy

If you can peel off more shell without peeling membrane that's what I do. Then you can slide them membrane down on them without popping any vessels, and wait for them to finish on their own. Just keep them damp enough the membrane doesn't stick to them.

CG hope all goes well

Morning all.... I get my blue girls from JulieNKC today
wee.gif
like I need more ducks...... yup I need more
lau.gif

I have discovered a loophole and will be getting more ducks. I am only allowed 15 adult poultry per the city laws, but can have 50 babies up to 4 months old. When animal control came last year about my chickens they stood wayyyy back (I really think they were terrified of the 4 BO and 4 silkies I had at the time) and just said they were fine as long as they were in a fence. So I'm pretty sure since calls are so little they count as permanent 3 and a half month old ducks and I can have 50.

Besides, I think I either have no boys or only one snowy may be a boy, and my magpies need a boyfriend. So I'll be buying some eggs from CG once she gets her shipping supplies.

Good morning All!
I didn't know we had them either. That's what took me so long to find what the heck the egg was. I think it's pretty neat, and can't wait to see a chick zip longways. It says on the internet they only stay with momma 3-6 weeks, so I don't know how long he'll stick around. Hopefully he likes his silkie momma and turkey brothers and stays awhile if I get him to hatch.
