That drake is a beauty.

What's the rationale behind introducing a white bib? Bibs are so hard to get right....
Thank you!

The rationale is that the bib as it appears in the Swedish in the standard is hard to get right, because bibs are so finickity. We are going to collaborate as to how to dictate the bib in the Bessemer's draft standard. We want it to be easier than the Swedish. There is no practical reason as to the size of the Bib, except that some overly large bibs look like runners or Magpies. We are considering dictating it so that Bessies are supposed to be a little patchwork in their bib. But, this is all in the future, and we may change our plans. But that's the plan for now.

Question about angel wing... What do you use to wrap wings? Do you wrap entire body or just wing. My feed store was sold out of the 18% grower, and insisted the 20% flock raiser was ok for them. But in the last couple of days, our month old drake has developed angel wing on one side. I have them back on the 18% grower, and just got a bag of mazuri feed (although I have not read nutrition label on it yet, so don't know protein level). Any specific diet recommendations or supplements for an angel wing duck?

Jaz, thanks!! I hope your goose hatch is easier than my duck hatch. Cant wait for pics! Fyi, my goose eggs go into lockdown in 24 hours!

Hey everyone. Thanks for the well wishes. One of my internal pipers is fading fast, but the other is almost hatched out and looking strong. The SA is getting impatient to make hatching progress so will begin to free it shortly.
Sbost, are both vent holes open? Condensation usually indicates lack of ventilation. Otherwise, your eggs look great! Hang in there!

No, they are closed. I have been opening them occasionally, for brief periods of time to hear the chirping, but predominately they are closed. Initially I forgot to take the plugs out and then left them that way to maintain temps. We just set this second incubator up for hatching only.

They were left out Monday night though, the night after the hatching duck was removed in the AM. And also we have been keeping them in because of the stinch from the first egg that hatched Sunday afternoon.

I just looked at the eggs again and there isn't anymore progress except the piece of shell fell in and you can see the little guy breathing hard. Earlier I heard loud chirping...

The egg with the most progress is due 3/28 and the other one is due 3/29. The other two eggs in there are due 3/28 but have not pipped. I have not candled any today but will if suggested. I was worried about the humidity... not knowing what I am talking about but it looked like these two air sack areas were soft or wet. Humidity has been in the mid 80s all day.

Iain, just clarifying here. Angel wing is when the wing tip turns out from the body of the duck. Ducklings and goslings commonly will get wing droop when the blood pin feathers start really developing. So if the wing is dropping straight down, leave it alone. The muscles will strengthen and allow him to carrier it up in the natural position.

Now angel wing (turned out like a hitch hackers thumb) can be gentlely placed back tucked under in the natural position and then held with get wrap. Wrap the wing, then wrap the wing to the body. Leave for 7-10 days and check. Re-wrap as needed until it corrects.

Thanks! The drake is definitely getting it in one wing.. But it just started within the past 2 days, so hopefully it is correctible. I just finished my next round of slow hatching the SA. All is going well so far. Plan to have her out by the end of the night, which will be about the time the other internal piper will be ready to finish hatching. Glad there are 2 of them as I plan to leave them in bator for another day, then put them in separate brooder tank for a couple of days.

In the meantime, my goose eggs are dipping today... So monitoring closely for shadows to get ready for them to go into lockdown.

will 20% flockraiser their entire lives not be sufficient? I assumed it was. I also would like to know what to look for in nutrition for my future duckies.

Eyeheart, I have been using purina non medicated start and gro, which is 18%, and my ducks and geese have done well on that. I was told mazuri was the gold standard of feed, so I had my feed store special order it. I had hubby pick it up yesterday, but have not checked out food label yet.
