Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Just makes sure their are no loose strings around the edges. (but you aleady knew that

That was actually my concern about a dish towel... strings and fuzzy tips. But I agree about traction being so critical and cheese cloth (and paper towels for that matter) do not provide that. QJ, I will look for rubber shelf liner. If I have that, I may try that instead of the towel.

Great, great pictures everyone. Love seeing everyone's extended families. We had this guy show up about a week ago and luckily only came around a few times. We had a few catfish die in the pond and he was around when the vultures went after the dead catfish but didn't challenge any of them. I was so worried about our ducks but he didn't pay them any attention. In case you are wondering... I keep a cast net over the ducklings pen when they start going out during the day... don't worry.

Here is a pic of my youngsters. 1 of these is 3 months old and the others are all 2 months. I'm really happy with the way the markings are coming along on these guys. My breeding goals are more to the lighter marked ducks with lots and lots of spots vs the heavy marked ducks with large patches of color. I still have some little things to correct with this generation, but I'm getting closer to my breeding goals.

They are adorable.

Love the shelf liner. It's only a few dollars, and it works great for brooding the first few days too. Makes the incubator so much easier to clean.

So pretty. From what I hear they are mostly fish eaters, I'd rather have one of them then the duck killing hawks that live here anyday.

That's amazing about your goslings. Mine are only a week younger, but are much smaller and still babyish.

It's official, I'm in LOVE with my silver apple.

I swapped out the paper towels with a dish towel, set some mash/water in it, and the sweet thing insisted on crawling into my hand to take a nap. I think I may have to raise these two separately in a special brooder in my office.

I wonder if it's because they are swan goose decendants and mine are grey lag descendants? Guess we'll find out when your toulouse hatch.

Mine were about the same size last week, they aren't growing as fast as they have been but have been feathering in quick. I think they'll be 100% feathered by friday. Ducklings are all the way feathered in.

If ya'll have a Dollar General. It's a dollar there. And you can also get those cheap wash clothes and then just throw them out. No stringies.
