Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Hey, goin. That thread you posted, it looks nothing like that. No blood, or yolk. Just pink "ooze".............. Weird...

DG. I need to be very frank with you now. I searched around and found the proper terminology: Umbilical Hernia.

It's as serious as it looks. Sometimes given a little time, it will absorb back into the body and the baby will live. But most of the time that's not the case.

The link is for an older thread involving a chick. It doesn't have a happy ending, but thought it might help to compare your duckling to: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/427300/newly-hatched-chick-with-umbelical-hernia-prolapse

I would leave it in the incubator and see what happens. But if I were you, I wouldn't get too attached to the poor baby.

I just got back from googling. I agree with the Hernia thing too. I'm just wondering where the yolk sac is. Could it be somehow in the hernia thingy?

I'm afraid this is kinda where I am on this too. Lets hope we are wrong.

....... Lets just hope for the best, he opens his eyes and looks at me sometimes, but not for very long....

It doesn't look like insides really, it looks like a sac of ooz connected to his vent. Is it bad of me to want him to pass away painlessly?? Cause I want him to just.... well.... die.

I found one account where it ended up living so just hang in there.

DG, i hope your baby pulls through.

Thanks... Not holding much luck out for him, but I hope he does to.... I promise not to ever open my bator again! & to not set anymore eggs till i have 3 working thermometers!.... This is insanity!

Just leave him in the bator and let nature take its course. It still may absorb into the body given time. It's scary looking for sure, but so's bumblefoot and vent prolapse and both of those can be recovered from with proper care.

In this case, leave it alone. If you've got other ducks hatching, you might want to put baby in a little tupperware or something to protect him so that other ducklings don't bump into the hernia and make it worse. Then stay out of that incubator!

If he's going to die, it will probably be sooner than later. Just leave the little one and don't stress it out.

Where is the yolk sac then? It wouldn't have been absorbed all the way yet. This is weird DG. Are you SURE it's not yolk at all? Maybe it ruptured somehow?

We never want those we care about to suffer, DG, even (and especially) new baby ducks. This happens in nature, and the universe either isn't perfect, or even these mistakes are just part of the balance. Tuck him in cozy, and with all care, say a little prayer (if thus inclined), tell him you love him, blow him a kiss, and go to bed. It'll either be better or over by morning most likely. If he's stronger in the morning, do a happy dance, and moisten his bum again. If he passes away, be glad that he was very young, and it probobly did not register as painfull to him, as he has never known life without it.

Here is a big hug for our dear DuckGirl.....

OK, not taping it down, but I will stay out.... I have him laid down on a napkin so the "oozy" thing doesn't get stuck in the wire bottom.
