Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

My new drake (sorry about the mud run, we're supposed to be mowing if hubs can ever get the lawnmower fixed! Loose ducks + lawnmower = can't end well):

One of the two new girls:

New silkie duckling, still not totally fluffed and still pretty clumsy, but moving around actively:

Another of new drake, with better lighting:

New drake needs a name, so do his two blue girls. Ideas?

The six juvies I set loose with the adults earlier in the week are doing well. Like the pekins before them, they make me pick them up to put them to bed at night. I think one of the bantams has gotten a quack and one of the saxonies as well. Good news, I was aiming for one of each.

DG, what year did you buy. American Buff geese are in the hard copy. Page 365 Welsh harlequin are on page 339. Sounds like you may have bought an old copy. Our hard bound is a 2010 edition and is the newest.

GQ lovely drake
Thanks! Not bad for free! The folks I got him from had an overbreeding problem, so he gets his own harem with me.

I'm still learning standards (I raise layers, so I'm not up on showing), but he stands nice and tall (as if I could catch a photo of him doing so). His bill looks too curved to me though. Either way, he's one handsome dude, even if I have to physically pick him up and put him to bed at night.

Cumberland blues are listed as
Disqualifications:
" yellow bills, feathers of any other color than blue forming one-fourth of plumage."
short, oval, flatten bodies
Bills that are weak, short, concave or pronounced "roman" in shape.

Should be-
Coloring:
Bill - drakes greenish-blue
Eyes brown
Shanks/feet smokey-orange to gray
Plumage
Uniform bluish slate throughout, with each feather of the back (especially in drakes) laced with a darker shade. Head upper tail cushion, and wing bows of drakes a darker shade of bluish slate. Drakes are typically one or two shades darker throughout than ducks.

It goes on and on but these are the big points. Each part of the body has a complete write up.

He is a great find for free, bet he is glad he has his own ladies now too.

Bakin....hope you feel. Egger soon.

Iain... Hope the bet can help #1

We have our first named tropical storm coming ashore today. It is north of us so we are getting winds and rain belts. Ended up doing chores at 3:30 and locking everyone up for the day. I didn't feel like doing it as the sun went down and we were getting more rain.

We are back from the vet. No. 1 has no serious injuries. They plucked the puncture wound area, cleaned it up, and left it open for draining. Vet said the bite was on veiny tissue area so that is why there is ongoing bleeding that should eventually stop on its own. He is on meticam and baytril and being kept inside in our extra pen in brooder room for the next 3-5 days. Vet commented that he sees a lot of geese, but never had he seen an lap AFRICAN goose before. He gave No. 1 great compliments about how well-mannered he was and wished all his goose patients were as nice as him.

Neighbors were staring out window waiting for our return and they raced right over to check up on No. 1. I thought the lady was going to cry she was so upset that No. 1 got hurt. They came in and hung out in brooder room for a while with No. 1 and the dewlaps and they fell in love with Spirit specifically (how can you not? lol). By the time they left, the lady was talking about how she wants geese if they are as nice as mine. They insisted on paying the bill, too (was $116).

All's well that ends well, I guess.

Iain, so glad it is nothing major. Also glad to hear the neighbors are so incredible, not everyone gets so lucky. #1's mom and dad are both very friendly, I wouldn't cross the big boy during breeding season though. they actually adopted the 4 buff American juveniles and move them around the pasture and in for the night when called. He (daddy African is named Buddy, and calls when I ask him Wassup) and will watch me doing chores and talk to me like he is giving instructions.
