Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

I was told to post my questions regarding eggs hatching on this thread. If you've read the thread “Duck eggs started hatching 4 days ago; no progress," then you know what's going on. For those who haven't read it, the title pretty much says it all.

Updates: When I went to let the ducks out this morning, I found a dead ducklings.

Mama duck had kicked it out of the nest, and it was right in front of the door.....I prodded it a little, even though I was pretty certain it was dead, to see if it would move.....It didn't. I flipped it over, and there was still yolk attached to it.....Other than that it was fully formed, so I don't know what happened....Why would it have hatched too early? There was blood or some other red liquid dried on the other eggs in the nest from the one that hatched....Will that affect those eggs? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening in the future? I'm really not having any luck letting mama duck hatch eggs.....She started with 15, and then something started eating them so there were only 6. Now this. What am I doing wrong?

If you need me to, I can attach some pictures of the dead duckling and the shell that I found with it, but I don't want to post those unless someone really needs to see them to give me an answer....

Maybe it was a predator. I found out I had skunks invading the chicken tractor I had two broody Muscovy ducks in. Eggs kept disappearing and then I found one almost completely developed egg/duckling that the skunk must have left behind. At first I thought it might have been one of the hens eating eggs until I smelled then saw the skunks. One of my hens abandoned her nest part way through incubation and the other one only hatched out 3 of her own and two of a different breed (bantams) I had added to her nest.

With the two bantam ducklings she either kicked them out of the nest or they fell out. If she kicked them out maybe it was because they were so small compared to muscovy ducklings

I think when a duckling is under mama it's really nothing that can be done, sometimes they just hatch to early or there is something wrong and they die in the shell or the membrane dries and they can't get out. lots of things can happen and we just have to let nature take her course. My last duckling to hatch started on Thurs morn. and by Sunday I knew unless I helped she wouldn't make it out. membrane was way to dry. So I started to work very slowly over the course of the afternoon, when I came to a teeny tiny bit of blood I stopped and put her back under mama for the night, hoping it was enough to let her finish, And she did. Hatched out by Monday morning. Healthy and busy as a beaver at 11/2 weeks old. You may have found the duckling still living and tried your best to save it and may have but it doesn't always work that way and it's very sad. I have never interfered with a mama duck hatching her eggs but we were down to this 1 egg and I was determined to try my best to get it out safely. Hopefully the rest will hatch without incident and you'll have healthy ducklings to love and watch mama teach them how to be ducks.
