there is only 3 of us normally and Mom really doesn't eat much. But if the kids come out for supper it will take a few ducks... even if they are huge.

X2, except I don't skin them usually. I like a crispy skin, even if I don't eat it. Gives me that full ducky flavor. Besides, my are egg ducks mosty, so mine don't seem to be as fat as soom, especially the khakis.
I was disappointed in what the pekins we butchered at work yielded recently. It's official: ducks are 90% feathers.

Love duck meat, but I have a hard time with the amount of work involved. I can do 6 chickens in the time it takes to do one duck.

How's everyone doing? My little farm is plugging along. We're overrun with duck eggs and I have 42 eggs in the bator, due on the 9th. One last hoorah for the season!

I turned off the bator on the 4th of this month.... no more hatching until goose time

of course this next year I'm gonna have to learn to hatch ducks. Unless I can get QJ to do them for me and I'll hatch her goose eggs

yard for geese and ducks to roam in during the day is fenced... Just need to get the Drive gate up as the feed shed is in that yard... then on to the garden area so the chickens can roam some.

My goose has become quite the babysitter.

She has also started teaching everyone to come to the front door to beg for treats too. And 20 or so birds (not counting the babies) doesn't seem like a lot when they are spread out over an acre, but it sure does seem like a lot when they are all gathered around the front door.

Cute pic Julie, hows the squirrel? Did I miss its release?

Hiya GQ - still hatching eh? I'm about to turn my back on for another dose of quail, but I'm not doing any other hatching until the geese start laying in the spring. I didn't even do the usual amount of ducks, since I'd gotten Ancona and Indian Runners about, I just decided I had enough for now.

I still havn't gotten my first duck egg from anyone yet. My large breed pullets are laying amoung the chickens, but not the california whites yet. Or silkies. (Of course, I wasn't expecting much from them) We are painting everything at our place, then we've got to get on the horse stalls in the barn. We're gonna line them with poultry net, and use the two big stalls for the two goose flocks (sebs and toulouse) this winter for nights especially. The chickens will just be in cages. I've only got like 9 of them. I don't suppose the turkey care, like the ducks, so I might just give them each an outdoor sheltor.

Julie, I love the pics!!! So cute!!!

Congrats to those getting eggs and sorry to those who are not yet. My cayuga girl continues to leave me a daily gift. Hubby and I finally tried one. Other than the yolk tasting richer, it was hard to tell the difference from a chicken egg. Based on the timing of her laying, I expect my other 4 girls to start laying next week or so.... then I'll be overrun with eggs. I'm thinking eggs will become a regular part of my dogs' diets soon.

Yep, my guys get dry food. I will try cracking an egg on top.

I'm pretty good, thanks. How are you?

By the way, not that we are in the rescue biz... but someone dumped a cat on our property last fall. We have fed her all winter, but could not catch her. Hubby named her Ninja. Well, Ninja had four kittens about 7 weeks ago. So, we got them established on a feed routine/location with canned food and then trapped them all this weekend. We found a home for one kitten, hope to rehome two kittens (but most likely will simply get them fixed and turn them back out onto horse property), but will keep Ninja and one kitten. Here is Ninja, our newest family member.
