Tips on growing sunflowers...

Some of my first flowers this year.

Everything in this bed in front of the house will flower eventually. My sunflowers are started under milk jugs close to the house for protection from critters and the wind. We'll see.

I got windows to cover this raised bed this year. It should give sprouts a chance while they are delicate and by the time they are big enough that I have to take the windows off, the weather should be consistently good.

This is my main veggie bed with windows on half this year for the first time.

Potatoes are sprouting above ground.

Spinach and salad greens sprouting, though today it looks like my bigger plants got nibbled down to ground! Ugh. The battle with critters is ENDLESS! This is in the bed with a fence and a window!

We planted a row of 10 pine trees that are about a foot tall. The past 2 years none of the trees we planted survived. So far at least half of them are doing well and have new growth since planting.

This is the landscape we are working with. Grasslands at 10,000 ft elevation. The mountains and continental divide about 5 miles away. The view is usually better but we have lots of wildfire smoke currently.

Oh wow! It is so unbelievable pretty!:love The landscape, the houses, the things you added to your yard/house! Right from a movie! Colorado is going on my list for states to visit when I'm ever in the US.
You have quite some plants for such a dry climate!

That is one heck of a beautiful view.
I like the grey stripe or mammoth. I have grey stripe, mammoth and titans in the ground this year. I start mine in seed trays, and then transplant to loosened soil (tilled and ammended if needed). Direct seeding works also. I try to space plants at least 18 to 24 inches apart, or more if you are able to. Deep water regularly. The closer the plants are the less likely they are to grow extremely large. Most are self supporting unless you see regular high winds, stalks on large sunflowers can get wider than a baseball bat.
Chipmunks and mice will steal a seed but after they get to plant form not much seems to want to bother them.
I use some as row markers and plant others, in excess garden space. We over plant them but my daughter loves them.
