Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

We feed extra eggs to the dogs our ducks just started laying and chickens are starting to lay again. Yesterday we got 6 eggs. We will be getting around a dozen a day soon.

I don’t mind a future chicken addiction, but I will have to go on long egg diets so they don’t go to waste!

My girls have been fairly good layers throughout winter considering I don't supplement light! I can expect a dozen eggs a day in the warmer months, too Luckily I have lots of friends a family around that love fresh eggs! And other locals willing to pay $4/dozen for farm fresh eggs as well.

When my chickens would lay all over the place my dog would find them and eat them. I even saw him get in the coop once and steal them! His coat would be so shiny even though he’s a strictly outside dog. We later found out why. Thankfully now they all lay in their nesting boxes as far as I know.

My dogs are quite picky. They only like over easy eggs the chickens prefer scrambled. We have so many eggs at all times, but it's nice to be able to have a food source you can always count on.

It was raining yesterday and enough of the eggs got wet that I decided to make the chickens a giant omelette with them this morning rather than eat questionable eggs. I crushed the shells back into it and topped it with grit, a chicken delicacy, lol.

I always feed back my eggs to the flock. Whenever we make eggs I throw the shells out to them and they absolutely love it.

Wow not my dog, he’ll eat anything. I once saw him eating a bunny he found after a storm. I was sad because I had grown used to him running around hiding but I never thought to catch him. He’ll also eat mice and rats if he finds any.

I do feed my chickens leftover eggs my kids ask for but end up not eating!

Yeah all our leftovers go to the chickens usually it's veggies. My kids do the same and ask for stuff then don't eat it.

Jumping in . . . egg vendor accidentally sent my eggs several weeks too early!! I'd requested end-of-February so the chicks would be six weeks when May hits. I was completely unprepared when I got the call from the post office.

But we'll give it a try, and hopefully it won't be too cold by the time they've outgrown the brooder.

Setting 22 eggs: BBS copper marans; a lavender marans; an opal legbar; rhodebar-based olive eggers; partridge orpingtons; and a bunch of legbar/orpington/bresse mutts (from a local farm).
All eggs survived shipping.

Is it bad if they get wet? Or is it because you don’t refrigerate and getting wet would mean you would have to refrigerate them?

Today is Day 6 for my incubated eggs. I checked a random white egg and it’s growing!! I didn’t really want to keep checking but it makes me happy to see progression.
