If you find the hole, spray a spray can of wasp/hornet spray down it at night--the kind that covers the wings so the wasps can't fly. That usually kills off the colony. Otherwise the queen overwinters in underground and starts another colony the next year. I've step in a fair number of these over my checkered career to have a healthy dislike of them.
