This was purchased from Walmart as an "on the vine" tomato about three weeks ago. It was sitting in the window over my sink. We were going to have BLTs for lunch and when I picked it up it just didn't look right with its bumps. Then when I sliced it, it was full of tiny plants. I then pealed the skin off the top to expose the bumps... more plants . I put it in a separate container to get some size on it and I will repot and try and grow some of these. I thought Walmart irradiated all produce, thus preventing this not so uncommon, as I found by googling, issue. It happens in Tomatoes, Corn, Beans etc... Called Vivipary.
