Toulouse Geese Thread

I use one of these to put out Oyster shell on one side and grit on the other it screws to the wall so they can['t stick their big foot in it. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/sto...l-feeder-2x175-qt-capacity-black?cm_vc=-10005 I only put out grit in winter when the ground is frozen solid in warm months both sides have OS in them. $4.99 at TSC

I use a feeder similar to this for the oystershell for the chickens. It seems miss Adelle the goose is not a big fan of the stuff. Every time I put it out there she seems to spill it everywhere. If I fill the feeder full of crushed egg shells they are gone before the end of the day. (I guess i need to eat more eggs!)

I plugged in my incubator. I am going to give a try at hatching a few of these eggs and see what we get, if anything. I am not so sure my "pair" are actually a pair. I was out working on feeding and cleaning the other day and left for a minute then returned to the Peking mounting my Toulouse Adelle! Goodness me! Now I wonder if I was seeing things when I thought I had fertile eggs. ;)

I have 2 drake Pekin ducks that are w/ my 2 sebastopol geese because of winter and I thought of that. LOL But my male does his hissing but the ducks rule the pen! Which peeves me to no end because I'm not happy w/ 2 boys that hate me unless I have peas! But my point is....do you think they would mount Bella? Sebies are a lot bigger than the Pekins! I would think he would have a hard time getting there! Lol

I guess I never really considered it a possiblity until I saw it. I've got the humidity up in the incubator. If everything continues to stay pretty steady then I will go ahead and add the eggs tomorrow. I ordered my garden seeds today too. Spring HAS to come soon!

I have a pair of geese. They were born Apr 2013. The goose is starting to take the prone position when approached and is very affectionate. The gander is getting very protective. No mating behavior has been witnessed so far. At what age and time of year do geese generally start to nest? I am in Ga where the weather is mid 30's at night and 40-50's during the day.

Shouldn't be long for you then once they start breeding I noticed eggs came about 2-3 weeks later then it will be up to her when she feels the broody bug, when you want her to begin to leave the eggs and see if she takes the bait. They say usually the first eggs aren't usually fertile so you might want to take the first half dozen for your nice fluffy omelets.

Hmmm - I just collected THREE eggs from what is now a large and well defined straw nest! Do geese share their nest like chickens? Now it's even more puzzling how many females I have...
Hi, I´ve just been catching up with this thread...yes, geese will share a nest, but it´s not very successful. They´re better having their own little spot, or they´ll steal each other´s eggs, then some will roll out and get cold. after 4 weeks of this, you´re likely to have next to nothing hatch. If, however, you want to collect the eggs, no problem.....

If one´s already laying regularly, you should know if they´re a pair...a true pair is quite obvious...the gander will kind of swan around, looking all macho. Right now I´ve introduced a couple of females to my existing flock, they´re not totally integrated, they hang around on the edge, and one of the females looks and behaves a little more like a male, although she´s not. She stands a little taller, keeps on the lookout, and she´s taking the lead of the two. But she´s a girl. Now, if she were a male, it´d be unmissable, far more protective, and almost glued to her side....even moreso with yours, now that you´re into the breeding season. Now, if the other goose you have there really is a gander, he´d never put up with an upstart randy drake trying it on with his gal! So, sounds doubtful. Can you post a reasonable pic of them for us to see?

Can you get a few fertile eggs from someone else to put in with the others? Then you won´t be disappointed if nothing hatches from yours.
