Tractor Supply Chicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only fewer brooders, but perhaps they have a contract to get left over pullets/straight run of left over breeds to sell possibly at a slight discount (since they would likely get a bit of a price break) I see some hatcheries online give discounts (usually a nickle on 25 or more) if you order leftover heavy pullets/roos/straight run..... I have not been this year to check TS but I know in the past they had some bins listed something like red pullets or such on color. what that means to me an outsider is it might be any of several breeds that are red in color, like cinnamon queens rir and the like.

Yep - this is where having some idea of the breeds you are looking for and a basic ID on what they *should* look like can help to sort out the possibilities. Granted some breeds are pretty hard to differentiate as day-olds, but it's a good place to start.

Our TS store had pullets, cornish rock, Black Australorp straight runs and ducks. We got our original 6 red pullets from there last year and they have done great. Great tempermant and great layers. I'm thinking of getting more. I am going up there today because I want different breeds and they are supposed to get a shipment in today. The manager said he is using a different hatchery this year. Last year, the mortality rate was 30%, the new one is 10%.

This is our first set of chickens so I have NO idea what chicks for different breeds look like. I wanted to wait to get what I wanted but hubby wanted chicks now. So we got the chicks from Tractor Supply. Once these get old enough for the coop, I'll order the two breeds I really really want from Ideal for May.

I'm hoping for some nice hens from my TS set, but I have a sinking feeling I've got all Leghorns. All I have of those is bad memories of being chased as a child on my grandparent's farm. :) Those were mean chickens! :D

I know in Ohio It's a state reg that states they can't sell poultry in groups of less than 6. Has to do with the health & safety of the birds. So it's not TSC telling you how many birds you have to buy in many cases, but the state you live in.

that's weird because tsc made me buy 6 but another chain feed store you could buy any amount you want here in oklahoma

Very understandable - I hope you find you have a bit more of a variety in your brood.

ETA - the upside of this sort of situation is that once you do have some ID'ing experience under your belt it can work very much to your advantage as you can start picking out the good ones in a mixed bunch that others may not realize what they are. This works in fish keeping as well - have found myself some great finds (and deals) in tanks where others (including the staff at times) are not aware of what is really swimming around in those tanks.

We also got our chicks from TSC and they look just like mine, I had a mix of Leghorns (White) and the other two may be red sex link. I also had a lot of BOs with mine.

I'm so hoping for some Buff Orpingtons. I have 4 breeds on my wish list. In order of preference: Buff Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks (any color), Austrolorps and Amercaunas (just 2).
RIR's would be good. Don't know much about red sex link though, will research that. Thanks!

Those two could be BOs, the darkness on their wing tips look like my Red Sex Link chicks though. But who knows I could be wrong about my chicks too lol
