Yeah... it looked a lot bigger than most others I've seen... the white spot... thing... (googles actual name of spot)... germinal disc... aka blastodisc.

On the surface of the yolk is the germinal disc, a small disc of cytoplasm containing the DNA nucleus of the female cell, or ova. You need a microscope to see the nucleus, but you can see the germinal disc with the naked eye. It appears on the surface of the yolk as a white dot. “If the egg is fertile, the dot is called a blastoderm; if it is not fertile, it is called a blastodisc.”

Thanks for confirming. No fertile eggs being eaten here.

I might just have to buy some store bought eggs again and do this again?! my story is back on the earlier pages (12 and below) I was right I had 2 roos and 3 hens! I still have the 3 hens.

Hi All - Well apparently I am not the first person to try this - I live in the Harrisburg PA area and noticed that our local grocery chain - GIANT - was selling "Fertile" eggs in the Organics section - the box said "all eggs in carton may not be fertile" so I thought maybe it was just a gimmick but decided to give it a try - bought 2 dozen @3.49 /dz.. The sell by date was March 25 and the eggs were from A&H Farms, Jaffrey N.H. - They were nice eggs, a variety of brown shades and some with dark brown speckles, (if I did it again i think I would swap with other cartons to get all neat lookin eggs...) So I let them warm up overnight to room temp. and put them in the incubator on Feb. 1, candled at 10 days and 22 of them were actually good! at 19 days 20 still looked good and yesterday 13 of those hatched! Not too bad for eggs that were washed, sanitized, refrigerated and bought off the grocery store shelf.... And there are quite a variey of chicks, some yellow with red sripes, reddish with yellow stripes, yellow with black eyering and specks, plain reddish and some yeller ones too! Any guesses on breeds??? ModernGames, you could try contacting the farm and seeing what kind of chickens they use. My guess based on another egg farm is they do use sex linked for the layers. They will probably put roos of a different color in with them. So they may use ISA Browns for hens and then white roos like Legherns or New Hampshire Whites so that when they look out at the ginormous flock they can tell at a glance which are roos and which are hens. Just an educated guess on my part, of course.

I think if you put white roo over sex linked you get an even mix of red and white babies and they are no longer sex linked so there is a mix of boys and girls between the colors. Perhaps someone that is an expert in genetics will confirm or correct my statement.

I miss Giant grocery stores. My hometown is Carlisle. I sure do miss the beautiful Cumberland Valley area!

I candled a few of the eggs today (Day 4) and saw several viable little heart beats! I couldn't see all of them because my light can't handle many of the blue and brown eggs this early but I was excited just to see something had actually happened!
