I did not even know you could buy fertilized eggs in the store!

There probably aren't any stores around here that would have them though (SW VA). I love learning new chicken stuff on BYC!!!

Doesn't refrigeration stop the development? Why do they sell them like that, for people to hatch them - or is this some niche market I just don't know about?
Interesting stuff!

Some people believe fertile eggs are better for you health wise.

From what I have read of all the threads on this chilling eggs down is part of the practice of storing enough eggs during collection days to have enough to fill the hatcher. Of course when you do it yourself you need to follow some guide lines like storing them in the position that they would go in the hatcher... pointy end down, keeping the humidity way up and the temps around 50 degrees. I am going on recent reading so If I got anything wrong I am sure someone will chime in. The eggs can be stored this way about two weeks?

So take it one step further. Here is Trader Joes... or Grocery store of choice.... They get eggs in within a few days of laying they sell alot of eggs so hopefully everything gets rotated. There is quite a chance that most will still be viable, even at Refrigerator temperatures which run around 45 degrees (I used to work in a convenience store).

If the eggs are fertile, the carton will be marked with the words fertile. It is not likely but possible that free range eggs will be fertile if they aren't marked as such.
Good luck and happy hatching!

I've been watching this thread for a while and getting my incubator on Monday. My Trader Joes doesn't sell fertile eggs but I have a local natural store that carries them. I notice they even carry Ameracuna eggs (EE's they look a little green to me). Along with some brown eggs they carry that even has a little side note on the bottom saying: Chickens are free ranged on grass and given treats by hand daily. I can't wait to see if they hatch when I finally get it set up

My friend found some trader joe 'fertile eggs' in the Giant in Halifax. She put them in the mail to me today. I have my incubater set up and ready. Have temp at 99.5 and humidity at 30%.

They were all brown eggs and look wonderful. Should get them by Tuesday.

Should I wait to let themst them settle a day before setting them in the incubator or can I put them in when I get them.
