Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

We stopped by the co-op and bought a dozen eggs. The neat part was that the were all colors of brown, cream and blue/green including an olive colored egg! I stuck them under the broody and Monday night we'll candle them.

Sadly I found out my Trader Joes does not stock the fertile eggs, darn! I even spoke to the guy who was stocking the shelves, since he happened to be there while I was looking. Different stores have different suppliers, so products may differ from store to store somewhat.

This is just the craziest thing..but people! Keep it on the down-low! If they knew we were all hatching these eggs they will start putting up the prices...sssssshhhhhh!

We have a TJ's just near us...going there tomorrow...

I am intrigued by the idea of hatching chicks from refrigerated store eggs. I have been wanting to do a make-your-own-'bator but have been reluctant to test it out on expensive purebred eggs.

I called around to the local health food stores (we don't have a TJ's) and Vitamin Cottage carries brown fertile eggs from Chino Valley Ranchers. I Googled them and it looks like they use ISA Browns. Has anyone had any luck with their eggs or regrets about ISA Browns?

I received an email reply from TJ's. They wouldn't give specifics as far as the location of the supplier, other than to say all stores receive products from their local region. They also contacted their supplier, and confirmed that both the roosters and hens are single comb white leghorns!
Looks like we're getting purebred stock for $2.49/dozen

Did you admit you'd hatched chicks from the eggs?

yep, I wanted to get a reply, so I mentioned it was for my son's science project. Whoever the customer service person was, was kind enough to check with the supplier, that was really cool.
