I liked the idea of my four, 1 cockerel and 3 pullets, for that price, but it's even better to know they are purebred! Thanks for checking on that!

Did you admit you'd hatched chicks from the eggs?

Can you feather sex leghorns?
I would like to hatch chicks with my 12 yr old daughter but I need to know right away which ones are the cockerels. We can't keep them and I don't want to raise them. I was going to try to find some sex-link eggs, but I'd rather do TJ's eggs.

Well, the chick that hatched upside down came out of its egg with a comb already visible, unlike the others. Then, within a few days, I noticed the others were also getting more tail feathers in than the suspected cockerel. Strike two.

By week four, the cockerel's comb was much larger than those of the pullets, and he still didn't have any tail feathers.

They're now 7 weeks old, and the roo is obvious from his comb - and still no tail feathers. Those will grow in all fancy later.

Leghorns of both sexes have large combs, so if you didn't have a cockerel to compare, pullets might scare ya with their combs.

I still have some swimmers, but out of 23 I have 5 left in the bator. Two are a little iffy. Not sure if I'm seeing what I think I am. So much easier than trying to candle all of these Marans, Barneys and Wellies though. LOL

I'm sure at least a couple will hatch, but not sure I'll keep them. I do want to do a bigger hatch of them later though when I have time.

what day are they on, and how old were the eggs when you set them? Ours were 8 days old.
By the way, how much land are you on? I'd love to hatch more, but I'm space restricted.

Stamp on the eggs say February 27th. Don't know how old that made them.

I think I've really only got three that have kept going. They're due the 28th.

Where I live is concidered county. I have the reverse of what I've always had. Tiny house, big yead. My backyard is 1/4 acre. I've had good sized yards before but this one is really big. I do need more space. My son started high school this year, so he'll be last to leave the nest and he loves chickens, so we're looking for some really cheap property. I don't want any place hotter than here and no snow. LOL Man I miss the Bay!

I have 56 Marans in lockdown right now and one pip. Hopefully I'll have chicks tomorrow which is when they're due.

My birds started laying again today, so I'll be hatching everything they give me for a while.

I have 42 that are due the 28th. Marans, Wellies, Barneys, bantam Wellies and some I forgets as well as the TJ eggs.

Set the 4 out of 5 eggs I got from my girls today. Cracked one to check fertility. Hopefully I don't have just one fertile hen. lol

My Silkies were always pretty fertile and got one of those today, so any laid for the next few days I'll just set to the side until this hatch is over.

Seriously concidering giving up on fixing my Sportsman and taking it in to the feedstore for repairs. I'm not doing something right and I think I'm going to need a lot more bator space.

I'd really like to hatch out a few dozens of the TJ eggs. Think I have a little project for those.

Along with a date on the end of the egg carton there is a three-digit number. This is the numbered date of the year the eggs were gathered/processed and how old they are if you do a little subtraction math. So a date of 001 would be January 1st, 031 would be January 31st, 364 would be December 31st. Today (Feb. 21st) is 052. When you go to the store for the eggs try to get the numerical date that's closest to the actual date of purchase. With TJ's *sometimes* it is as low as 4 days, but most often it's a week. (And, marketer's trick, the fresher eggs are usually at the back of the bin as they want to sell the older ones first)

Good luck!

OK so I have to remember that.

Oh and they were just filling the egg section and I was digging and they were standing there watching. They weren't to happy with me. LOL I always dig. Milk, fruit, whatever, I go for what looks freshest, but when I have had to buy eggs I usually catch the crates then bring out. Anyway they were getting a little frustrated, since I was trying to restack and told me they'd do it for me. hehe I'd look at the cartons, but have them cut down and in lockdown for a different hatch.
