Training Pigeons

I am planning on getting some pegions ( hopefuly homers) and would like to train them to return from far distances. But specifically I would like for them to be trained for specific things, but i dont know what they are capable of learning. I would like to take them out with me when I go for walks, Away from the house so I was curious to if they can be trained to follow you, like fly around but close over head? Also can they be trained to perch on your shoulder? or come when called by a whistel or something, and possibley return to your hand? I know some of these seem a bit odd, or out there, but I have no clue to what they are capable of so let me know if these are possible and what else pegions can be taught? thanks for your help!

Yes, they can be taught to sit on your shoulder, come to a call, etc. The only thing I'm not sure about is having them fly along to follow you.

Well I assume if those are possible why not follow? I heard of one lady that had the white pegions and she trained them for certain events ( weedings, funerals, ect.) After they were released they would stay close to her car, then follow it as she drove away. This I can't belive,..unless someone can back this up??

I don't really see a point in that, unless she uses fancy pigeons rather than white homers. Which is dangerous and irresponsible. Now there is a guy who trains his birds to fly around and come to their crate when called. He can make them hover over the crate until he tells them to land on it. It's pretty neat.

I'm sure if it were a tame bird and you took it on a walk, it'd do a bit of shoulder sitting, but if it flew, it'd come back to your shoulder. People have trained their pigeons like falcons as well.

I'm having a hard time finding videos of both, but they are out there. The old guy who trains them to that box is on the Share The Blue Sky video (well, one of them). Can't find it on youtube. The falcon-like pigeons (flying around, then diving down and swooping up to the person's hand like in falconry) are on youtube somewhere.

If you hand feed one from about a week old.....yes it will do all that. did that with a homer for my son, it would ride on his shoulder when he walk to school then fly back home..


Ones trained for wedding and etc. are just train to home, and fly home after they are release.....MUST BE RACING HOMER, not just any homer or pigeons
