@casportpony do you have a good dosage for SMZ-TMP? Not an easy thing to research. I am seeing 13 mg per pound divided into 2 doses orally daily for birds, and another site that says to put 400 mg in a liter of water daily. The SMZ is 800 mg, so 1/2 tablet in a liter?

I might try an Epsom salt poultice on the wound to draw out infection. You can mix your own or buy a similar product below at WalMart first add aisle or TSC in the horse supplies. Here is a recidpe: Add 1/2 tablespoonful of water to 1 tablespoonful epsom salts applied to a wound for 36-48 hours.

Off the top of my head I think I read sulfa doses are ~50 mg/kg per day. Let me do some more research.

I remember one person giving their duck ether 1/2 or 1/4 of a 480 mg tablet twice a day.
I think that was @DiamondSwan. @DiamondSwan, do you remember how much you duck weighed when you were treating him for bumblefoot? And did you give 1/4 or 1/2 a tablet ?

So I will update with a pic in a bit but I just cleaned her up for the night. I was able to pick out a lot of tissue and got to some healthy looking skin underneath. I got it to bleed a little, so that's encouraging. I flushed it with a little SMZ water and dressed with more Vetericyn. She is plucky as ever and tucked into her pellets before bed.

Do you think that is a good idea? Obviously you do because you did it.

I don't get it.
Can you help me understand how a pill that is suppose to be taken orally would do any good if it was used as a "wash"?

I really don't get it, and I am trying to understand so don't take this the wrong way.

That looks a lot better. I think it's probably safe to remove anything that is yellow.

Is the swelling going down too?
It was really large the other day but it does look like it is getting smaller, right?

I am only going by 20+ years with horses, but I’ve used crushed SMZs repeatedly on bad punctures, proud flesh, and other weird horse things, all with great success and originally on the recommendation of vets. Maybe it’s useless, but ime it’s helped.

Yes I do think it’s getting a bit smaller? It’s at least tightening up as the tissue dries out. I picked out as much as would easily enough come out, I’ll keep working on it.

Yeah it’s not a formal treatment but I’ve used it with success over the years, including syringing it into stubborn hoof abscesses. Might be an old school/backwoods thing, idk.
