Turkey Coop Build

Pics
Turkeys can be some frustrating birds at times. I keep mine confined most of the time to a large run or else they can drive me bananas with their crazy shenanigans. Mine are currently not let out at all. I will be happy when egg laying season is done. Those hens are driving me crazy. They are noisy complainers who want out to lay in the tall grass. :barnieI actually prefer the toms to the hens. The toms are less noisy.
How big do you make your nest boxes, Hen?

I don't use nestboxes. My turkeys make their own nests on the ground in the tall grass or on the floor of the shed. They continue to switch sites when eggs are collected. I also use a plastic dog house that they use in early spring but generally never use after spring preferring ground nests in the run or field of allowed.

Have you ever traded chicken eggs for theirs? I tried it with guineas but they somehow knew.

No I never had. I have used ceramic chicken eggs to get them to use certain spots to lay. I only let my turkeys hatch once.

I made the mistake of letting 2 hens sit about 5 feet away from each other. When one hatched it switched moms which than became a game of "toss the poult, because it ain't mine" between the hens. I stepped in and pulled everything and had my broody bantams hatch the eggs which I pulled and I brooded the poults myself. It worked so well I have since used my bantams to hatch and I raise the poults.

One year I let the bantams raise the poults and that was a mess as I had a hard time getting those turkeys to stay out of the bantam coop, and the bantams quickly became terrified of those giant birds.

I swear turkey hen could tell the difference.
at first my turkey was laying in the chicken nest box, with fake egg and chicken eggs.. Then she switch so I put a turkey egg in there and she was using it for a while.. Then she was getting out looking for a good spot I think... except she was heading towards the road... So I put her eggs back when she made a spot between the nest box and the coop wall. She would wander around the poultry yards looking for a better spot, but didn't jump the tall fence and eventually would lay in her spot.. except when I left her a fake egg.. I swear she could tell the difference.

Turkeys are goofs. These are very determined birds too. My hens will walk the fence peeping for hours because they want out in the tall grass to lay. Eventually the egg will just come out finally right where they are walking. Than they go back to the rest of their day.

Turkeys in general like a hidden nest with something over their heads whenever possible.

It sounds like it's going to be an adventure!
I cut boards for more panels for the turkey run. Then painted them. After they are assembled, i will only need one more panel with a door in it. I found a free door at the place we dump our trash in the bins. I brought it home because it has a door knob which i didn't have for the door for my coop. But if the wood is good i may use it for the run.

I got the one panel assembled today and the wire tacked on. I started another panel but it will have to wait as it was getting dark out.
Tonight i worked on the cage i am building, got the plywood for the back painted, made a divider and painted that. Ripped enough wood for the doors. Hopefully i can wrap that up soon.

Today was a super day, really nice weather and we got a lot accomplished! Hubby was very helpful and got the door on the coop, then put on the roof! He also helped put the run panels in place. I made 2 more panels, painted them and tacked the wire on. Then we got busy and put all the panels up except the one that will have a door for the run. Tomorrow i hope to build the door and get the last panel on. This project is really coming together! 20180708_134643.jpg
