Update on my turkey hen with the prolapse

She past away on her own this afternoon...

I cant believe I didn't notice something was wrong sooner than last night, they have all been acting normal so I didn't suspect any problems.

So sorry

Don't beat yourself up about it, it's all part of keeping livestock.

Hi all, I got 100 turkey poults on Tuesday and 6 of them died in two days, do you guys have any tips? They have food/water all the time and the heat is always at 30 degrees Celsius, any ideas what the prob is?

That happened to one of my Bantam hens a few years back, after laying a record clutch of 21 eggs. She also passed away shortly after I found out about her prolapse
So Sorry for your loss though, : (

What kind of turkeys? Were they shipped? That is a lot of poults, may be just normal mortality, especially if they were shipped (stress from shipping). If they were shipped, how long did it take them to get to you? Are you watching them to make sure they are all finding the water? With that many, it is useful to make a mark, like with a colored felt marker, on the ones that you observe drinking and eating, that way you can concentrate on the ones that haven't yet. Or maybe set up two brooders, one for poults that you see drinking and one for the others. The more aggressive ones can overshadow the others. I like to start mine with poultry vitamins in the water. Or Red Cell (1 teaspoon per gallon of water).

Yes , they are shipped from the States, that is a really good idea to mark them! We are putting in a tablespoon of molasses per gallon but... is vitamins the same thing as protine? Cuz there's 28 percent protine in the feed. Thanx a lot! And were do you get Red cell?

It probably only happened last night. A prolapse is an emergency that can't wait a day for treatment. Birds usually die within 24 hours if the prolapse isn't corrected, and their overall medical condition gets worse hour by hour.

Thank you for posting what happened to her. I'm sure it was not easy for you to have her die like that. As unfortunate as it is that she did not get the relief that she needed, hopefully her death will emphasize to others how dangerous this condition is, and how urgent it is to decide how it should be handled, whether immediate treatment or immediate culling, because waiting just isn't a viable option. I'm very sorry that you lost her.

I asked Ronott1 what he thought of the cain issue and he found this for us on prolapse vent:

I found this and article about it. xylocain is lidocain in the article. It really should be used by a vet an only when performing surgery. Why don't they try an anti inflamatory? They are much safer for chickens.

Quote:
There is still a great deal of work to be done in the pharmacokinetics of these various drugs specifically in our exotic avian species. However, we have come a long way in helping our avian patients deal with pain, thereby enhancing their recovery from illness and give them a more quality of life in the case of terminal disease processes.

Sorry for your loss-- I couldn't see well in the picutre but it looked more serious than the prolapses that I have seen in sheep. NEver had a sucessful case of repair, so don't feel badly that you couldn't save this girl. You tried, and that is the important thing.
