Turkey Talk for 2014

I think some of it may have to do with how your brain works. I've very math and chemistry oriented, so weighing and percentage loss over specific days really works for me. On the other hand, when it comes to artistic talents I'm not qualified to draw stick figures or play Pictionary. So even though I'm very good at visually estimating percentages, and even though the reference pictures of air cells are very good and it seems obvious, when I candle my eggs my brain can't figure out how what I'm seeing applies to the air cell pictures, and it just doesn't work for me. Circular frustration!! I think it's more difficult for me to mentally translate between 2D and 3D than most people. Maybe if I had a 3D model with air cell lines drawn on it I could use air cell size more easily. I know, it doesn't make any sense (to people with any artistic talent). Kind of like it doesn't make any sense to me that some people just can't do basic algebra. But it's all about how our brain works. I'm just glad there are two different methods, and that at least one works for me!! Maybe with more candling experience, I'll figure out how to do both..
Very true. Like I had said in the other thread, initially I had anticipated on weighing but didn't have my scale and I wasn't too keen on buying a new one. Then I was a deterred from doing so after reading that thread. I had spent $50 on 12 eggs and didn't want to lose any; it was a big investment for me and I was trying to prove to the hubby it wasn't a waste of money, lol. I was afraid that for me, getting too technical with it would stress me out and drive me up the wall with worry. Everyone should do what makes them most comfortable and, as you said, be glad there is more than one way to determine correct humidity so we each have the best chance of hatching lots of beautiful babies

Need opinions ASAP! Tomorrow was the "hatch date" I had figured, turkeys started hatching yesterday. 14 out of 20ish eggs hatched and the hen is now off of the nest since late morning and it's only 68 degrees out today. Should I risk her getting very upset with me and get the remaining eggs out of the nest and put them under a heat lamp or do I just see what happens?

Hey guys, anyone know where I could get some blue slate or royal palm hatching eggs? I had some lined up but the seller's hens went broody and now I'm out of luck. I can't find more for sale anywhere! At this point I'm almost willing to take any breed besides eastern wild.

KYTinpusher just had some Royal Palm eggs on the 'Just in Time Hatching Egg Auction & BIN Thread.' This was a few days ago and they did not sell, but they commented they may have more soon to another member. I would private message them and see if they have anything. Good Luck

She went back on the nest not too long after I posted, maybe more will still hatch!

I let a duck hatch turkey eggs this year, so when two of my turkey hens took over a duck nest, I let them hatch them. Here is a short video of my turkey hens with their ducklings.

Well I asked because I noticed the other poult today had a almost clear liquidy poo with gel like stuff in it. Couldn't decide if it was red or orange. :/
That was it really, that I noticed. Went from fine to sleepy, and dropped wings, to couldn't walk or stand, to dead.

I am having a similar problem. I have had 4 Turkeys die in a matter of a week. They within a days time go from running around the entire yard few to during and droopy and then they have neck control problems or balance issues and are dead by nightfall.

Just lost my lone Narr that hatched. I'm so bummed. Now I will most definitely need more. Could it be a wry neck thing?

Just candled my eggs, they went in the incubator last Wednesday. So far I have 10 babies growing, another with very little growth that I'm thinking may be an early quitter, one obvious clear and another possible clear. I'm happy with the 10 thy show promise so far!!

Question:: if the yolk gets scrambled during shipping can the embryo still grow? The yolks don't look like obvious round shapes like my chicken eggs did. Just curious, thanks!!
