Turkey Talk for 2014

I am certianly no expert on turkey. But here in my house I had mine in a 30 gal. tote that came with a lid, I had to keep the lid partly over the tub or the poults would cry as they would get to cold.with the ac on. They have to stay warm till they completely feather out. I do not put my poults on the ground till they are 2 months old at they are more tender and get sick and die faster than chicks. Try getting some electrolites and mix it in the water for a couple days. I had one poult that ate the pine shavings in the brooder and he nearly died. I had to keep dripping water in him to soften it up so he could pass it thru. Try not giving him any solid food for a couple days and only soft stuff like scrambled eggs and yogurt. I hope he makes it and I know they will worry you to death.

These guys are almost 6 weeks old, so feathered out. I don't think he'll pull out of it this time. If he's no better in the morning, I'll cull him. Poor guy. I wonder if all this has damaged his brain. He's always shown some improvement by now, but not this time.

I had one eat pine shavings in the grow out pen and he didn't make it.

Give him some brewers yeast (niacin) & some carrot juice (vitamin A). See if that helps.

I don't have brewers yeast. Carrots I have. But he's been eating alfalfa, which is high in vitamin A. Unfortunately, I think it's too late. But thank you. I might get some brewers yeast to keep on hand.

I don't think this is going to help Gevshiba at all, but I am going to mention it because it might help someone at some point in their life.
There is a condition that cage animals (like rodents/rabbits) can be born with. It keeps them from digesting any nutrients. They actually survive for a time by eating their bedding and honey if they happen to get it as a treat. You won't know your pet has it until they are dying.
I have to wonder if other animals can get it too.

Some also just fail to thrive no matter how much we do for them we lose them. It happens in all animals chickens and turkey alike. So don't take it personally if the poult does not make it you have tried everything.

Sorry you are dealing with this. Sounds like it might be time to cull him, please excuse me if that comes across as harsh. If he cannot survive on his own then it is best to let him be. I think theres a difference in trying to help one of your birds for a little while and keeping them alive. Sounds like this one is on the equivalent of life support with you saving him on a near daily basis.

I know it's not an easy decision to make, trust me. I have lost several poults in the last month. Come to find out after a month of suspense that my birds had Mycoplasma & Bordatella Avium. Of course this news came about the same time my Chocolate Orpington laid her very first egg; she only got to lay 3. I just put down all 16 of my birds

For some it's little solace because every loss is difficult, but at least you only have one that is sick.

So one of my poults seems to be a shavings eater. It is about 2weeks old and I just notice today when I changed the bedding that it was gulping down tons of shaving instead of food. I separated it but its so mad and peeping SOOOOO LOUDLY. It does have a friend to keep company. I may have to try using different bedding. Any suggestions?
