Congrats American Mom I hope they all hatch for you!

Silkie I don't know how to do my own so I barter for them to be done for me. The guy does his own and I give him a couple roosters for doing mine for me and we are both happy. :)

That works. I just happened to grow up in a family who hunted, fished & butchered. So it only took me a couple tries & being shown once to get the hang of it. I just do a few at a time to fill the freezer & butcher as needed as birds grow out.

I have found skinning much easier than plucking & much faster since you don't have to heat water to scald. If you are like me & typically discard skin anyway then skinning is the way to go. If you like the skin on your bird, you will want to scald & pluck.

I agree Attila.

Silkie I have heard that skinning is easier and faster, I usually pull the skin off of mine anyways so it would not bother me to skin it and save time.
Thanks :)

Who says turkeys aren't smart? My poults aren't a week old and they are already jumping on top of the heater and sliding off the other side. Such a fun game! But now I have chicks that need to go in the brooder, so I built a barrier out of pvc and plastic hardware cloth. Both sides are pacing and trying to get through. But now, some of the poults are jumping on the heater and trying not to slide off. Next they'll be launching over the fence from the heater. Maybe it's just instinct to want to go over any fence. But 10 turkeys vs 17 chicks in the poop department? No contest. Turkeys win by a landslide.

Sounds like spring is booming at your house gevshiba! How fun to watch them sliding and playing! I saw a guy do a short video of his two turkeys doing a mating dance till the hen started running in circles and the tom following, well the tom got so dizzy he spun out and staggered and nearly fell down. lol well some company saw the video and bought it from him!

"Take a video and post it!" you might just make some money. :)

I'm glad I don't have that many in brooders. But I have had 90 in brooders to tend at one time and that is a lot of poop scooping! lol

When you should get your turkeys if you want them to be ready by November? Rose

Broad Breasted turkey only take about 5 months to get good size for that. Heritage birds take a lot longer to get max weight abt. 18 months so do it sooner it depends on your family size and what you need.
Broad breasted should be abt. 30 lbs + and heritage maybe 16-20 lbs I would think it also would depend on the breed you chose.
