Ya, that is kinda the only way right. There are also sensors you can buy, so when something walks in front of them, an alarm goes off out of another sensor you can have in your bedroom.

I havn't had anyone try to steal any of my birds. I have had some people in the past steal my egg money and some eggs. I do sell them. In years past I left the money out in a cookie jar and for years had no problems. I have had some thief's. I have them all on video. I don't leave the money in the jar at night but do in the day. I have a sign up that says I have cameras. I put the last thief's pictures on the bulletin board. He came back and saw the pictures but hasn't been back since. Now I have a camera also set so who ever drives in I get their tag number.

Locks are a good idea.
My Grandma would say a shotgun, just the sound of the cocking will make people freeze and run.
An electric fence would work too. Maybe two layers of electric fencing but the first one isn’t hooked up so people think it doesn’t work and then they get to the second one.

You can buy motion sirens that will go off when someone shows up. Some also have a motion light also and a camera.

Probably build it sturdy enough to keep out raccons, large dogs, and maybe bears. Then add padlocks.
