My cat Tiger had multiple fractures of the right hind leg, femur and all the toes caught in a fan belt accident. Returning from the emergency vet with his leg in a splint - the whole thing from hip to toe tip - I gave him a dose of Arnica which reduced the swelling so much that within an hour the cast slipped off and had to return to vet to have it redone. My point is that swelling is associated with fractures. I have speculated that in the absence of a splint then swelling can serve to stabilize the break somewhat.

I love those pigeon splints!! They are cute!

And Squeak is adorable.:love

Suggest you give a dose of Symphytum for at least 3 days.

I've given him 1 tablet yesterday and 1 today. Should I give him more? The human dose is 1-2 tablets 3x a day. How is your cat? That sounds like a nasty accident.

I never encountered broken legs in my birds, so no experience there. Since he is putting some pressure on that leg is a good sign. I would follow what Biophiliac suggested with the meds and ointments. You can always install the splints when you think needed. Without the splints, it is easier to see the swelling progress.
I sent the Vibes across the pond to Boomer and Squeak. There was no Inter-stellar activity going on, so they received the messages.:thumbsup

Thanks caveman! I appreciate it!

I'm soooo happy! I threw caution to the wind with boomer and squeak today. I went to let boomer out and she wouldn't fly off, just sat on the trap. Squeak was desperately trying to get out with her so I let him out. Then neither would fly off so I let the other two younsters out and they all flew off together. They stayed together and just flew laps of the house up and down all over. Never really went out of sight! All four flying together :). After an hour or so boomer and squeak came in together and the other two a bit later. This is great! My goal is in sight!

Dodgy video alert! I tried filming the three youngsters flying last week! I'm not much of a camera man! I nearly fell over!

Congratulations! :clap Mine usually assemble on the roof when I let them out. It seems like they wait for the others and then at some signal I can't discern they take off as a group. I feel lucky they do loops overhead where I can see them most of the time too. Once they have their flying culture developed I think its easier for young or new birds to fit in and join the flock.

I have one short clip of my flock flying - you have to upload to youtube first, right?

I think I'm seeing the beginning of hawk migration. I'm going to vary the times I let them out. I hope I don't have to confine them completely.:(

I hope that boomer stays with them now. I think the lack of a flying flock gave her no reason to hang around. It was so satisfying to see them all together. Mine normally fly in the late afternoon as I'm at work daytime. So letting them out earlier isn't a norm for me. I hope we don't have a hawk migration. I haven't noticed any particularly local but that's not to say they aren't about. To upload a clip you need to upload it to YouTube first.
