unpasteurized cow's milk. or raw cows milk where can I get it?

JMO
Milk of either raw or pasteurized can be *bad*. If the milk is bad quality before pasteurization, it doesn't get any better!
For health purposes, I definitely believe raw is healthier for us, however, you are never going to get the large population to subscribe to that because in this economy you need the large dairies to make the quantities of cheap milk. And although I will likely step on toes-- the large dairies just can't be as clean and healthy as the small farms. Hired help doesn't care as much as someone who drinks their own milk from the tank.
So, find your local supplier and pay them well for kitty cat milk. Since the current commercial price is under $10 for a hundred pounds of milk, you may find farmers willing to sell to pet markets!

I'll never forget the look on my pediatrician's face when I told him my kids were drinking raw milk from our cow. He shut up when I told him our cow was healthier than my kids and tested more than they were! She was a 4H cow who was tested yearly before fair season.

No added antibiotics & hormones. "The source of most commercial milk is the modern Holstein,* bred to produce huge quantities of milk--three times as much as the old-fashioned cow. She needs special feed and antibiotics to keep her well. Her milk contains high levels of growth hormone from her pituitary gland, even when she is spared the indignities of genetically engineered Bovine Growth Hormone to push her to the udder limits of milk production."?(from A Campaign for Real Milk )

In Canada its illegal to sell raw milk. However it isn't controlled by politicians but rather the Milk Marketing Board of Canada which sets the prices for quota and retail values of milk in Canada and pays the dairies and milk transportation companies. Talk about an industry monopoly, eh!

In order to get raw milk here you need to have your own cows or goats or sheep and can only use that milk to feed your family and your animals.

Pasteurization was discovered by Dr. Pasteur (think he was a doctor anyway) as a means to kill listeria and other harmful bacteria which was rampant in the milk supplying the cities and making people sick. The listeria was so rampant because of poor animal husbandry / hygiene practices in the city dairies at the time. The unfortunate part of pasteurization is that while it kills the potential harm it also kills the definate benefits of raw milk.

I personally would be wary of anyone selling raw milk unless I knew them personally and had witnessed their milking practices for myself. I love the taste of raw milk and nothing makes better buttertarts than fresh raw cream but I know that I'll only ever get it here in Canada if I'm willing to milk my own animals.

I tried raw milk when I was in the South of France and it was unlike anything that is called milk in the States. I live in the mid-Hudson valley and would like to obtain raw milk without having to drive hours.

P.S.- I'm not allowed to have any farm animals where I live. For some inexplicable reason, chickens are okay.

That's the kicker, isn't it? Good hygiene, etc, produces good milk. But in large quantities, how can you know? I certainly doubt the conditions of cows nowadays. But nuke the milk, and all's good. *sigh*

I have honestly never tasted raw milk.

...I'm feeling sarcastic today. It's directed at society, not at anyone in here.

If your state allows it, look for cow "shares" I purchased cow shares from someone, (a shirtsleeve relative, whom I know I can trust to properly care for the cows without antibiotics and hormones, and cleanliness) and then I buy the milk for $7.00 a gallon. I buy 6 gallons a week, and it is still not enough for us. It tastes so good that we increased our consumption by 3 x's what we were drinking when we were buying the organic milk at the store. Our milk will last at least 10 days without souring. Raw milk is one of the healthiest things you can do for your body. I would never go back to pasteurized. We will be buying milking goats soon, I finally tasted what a really good tasting goat's milk tastes like. It tastes every bit as good as the cow's milk we drink when taken care of properly. No goaty taste whatsoever!!! Highly recommend raw milk!!!

My family and I drink raw milk on a regular basis. I should say my oldest son and I. I get it from a friend that has a farm, and I swap 1 dozen eggs for 1 gallon milk. I will never buy milk at a store again. I love it. My youngest son refuses to drink it because it comes from a cow, and according to him he wants the milk that comes from a machine. I know, I know I tried telling him that all milk comes from cows, but he doesn't believe me. Anyway, raw milk is the best that I have had in years. I make my own butter. I have fresh cream for coffee, and whipping cream.

Never nuke milk. You change the protein in milk into a poisen the body can't handle! In fact, microwaving any type of protein changes the chemical structure of it and makes the protein very bad for your body.

I think they were just refering to pasturization, not nuking it in your home microwave.

I love being able to drink raw milk. My mother is horrified that not only do I drink it, but I feed it to my kids as well. I tried some store milk (non-fat since that is what I always used to drink), and it tasted awful to me! Thank goodness we can have goats!

Sorry, I meant nuke as in heat the milk a lot.. Pasteurization. I implying (badly) that milk producers might not have the most healthy cows because they pasteurize the milk to kill everything, bad or good.

....I clearly shouldn't post while cranky.

(I've microwaved milk before!
