Unusual looking Brahma rooster

Are you sure it couldn’t have been a cinnamon queen egg? They have the gold and Columbian genes.
Your Brahmas are surprisingly nice for Tractor Supply birds.

Yes, well Columbian is not a recessive gene.
Understand columbian is not a recessive gene, what is possible is anything that was in the past crossed into the blood line , no matter how little is left mathematically , can and will show up when inbreeding happens ! Everything is made from crosses at some point!

I have been breeding chickens for 40+ years , from several variety’s of show birds when I was younger to game birds and now back to a mixed flock for hobby and egg production.
Seeing several things that never made sense until you look at how the breed was made and even better if you get a breed that some one has had for years and they disclose what they crossed in years back to strengthen their flock, breed back to close to a family that’s already tight and you will have surprises that will make you question everything that you think you know!

I was trying to exclusively hatch Brahma eggs at that time, but it’s possible I might’ve mistaken a light shaded egg for a Brahma, I only managed to hatch two out of about 8, the roo and the other one was a dwarf hen, which unfortunately passed at about 3 months old. My assumption was that they’re too closely related to hatch healthy Brahmas from and I figured his coloring was a result of inbreeding, so I gave up on breeding the two dark Brahmas.
I doubt breeding them together would cause inbreeding depression, considering that hatcheries tend to breed pretty indiscriminately. But I suppose it's possible. I have had to make an outcross because one of my males was producing offspring with subpar health before. Or it could just be the conditions at the time. Some birds' annual reproductive cycles are a bit goofy.

Columbian, which is a dominant gene, is a result of immediate crossing, not impurity in the background. Columbian would never emerge unexpectedly through inbreeding.

Wrong, I have seen a columbian pattern come out on other breeds because they were crossed into the family years ago and only have 1/16 mathematically left in the family ,
Sooner or later this will happen if you inbreed out of necessity !

What breeds and varieties were these chickens? Do you have pictures?

White rocks and even white Cochins were some of the best I have seen, came out strong ! And back in the day most people didn’t keep pics of there chickens , and we never carried a phone /camera in our pocket
you will see strange colors and even character changes in about any breed when breeding to close , sometimes as simple as combs change, leg color , crest show up and yes colors or color patterns of feathers ! I never recommend inbreeding if brother and sister is from a tight family , I have had to do this due to losing oringinal brood stock, gave me the time and security to cross in new blood line and breed back to my original stock

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR THIS, THE INTERNET IS IN YOUR POCKET -DO SOME READING TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND

White varieties are either recessive or dominant white, and if a recessive white is crossed with a dominant white you are likely to eventually see the colors that were under the recessive white come out.

There is a lot of good reading on the internet, I would recommend this to everyone interested and understand that strange things will happen the longer you breed chickens , rules do not always apply, especially when to much of the same blood/genes are involved

Could you link some of that reading? I’m always looking to learn more about chicken genetics.

The answer is very simple. The rooster was not sired by two Dark Brahma birds(Sire and Dame) He is of a Silver Columbian pattern. This means that if The hen that laid the egg was in fact a Dark Brahma hen then the sire must be either a Gold or Silver Columbian male.

Let's not try to make new unknown or mystery recessive mutations to explain the rooster's fenotype, let's use Occam's razor principle.
