UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please Help!!!!!!!!!!! Chickens Murdered in DeBary Florida!!!!!

The mayor (Bob Garcia) is on our side. He comes over all the time. You would have to petition the rest of the city council

I just wanted to clear the air a bit. There was no prohibition of chickens when the family got them. The code was recently (like a month ago) re-written, and the City of Debary put in new language to define certain things. I am not certain about grandfathering someone in, but it would be akin to the City all of a sudden saying that no one can have garages. What do you do then? Do you blame a person for violating a law, when there wasn't one??

Sorry, I misunderstood the circumstances. My bad. Oy! Politics and bureaucracy. I'm sorry this is all happening to you. You would hope they would just grandfather the birds in. Good luck!

My heart goes out to the little boy and his family. It is a horrible thing to go through if it was predator or human. I would predator proof the coop with hardware cloth and put a lock on the door to protect either way...then keep fighting to keep your chickens.
If not allowed outside ones, Silkie house chickens could work. I have two that live it wire bottom rabbit cages with kitty litter in the pan. When they are around the house they wear their chicken diapers. They often go traveling with me too, to the TSC....feed store etc..
I wish I was closer as I often hatch babies but I'm sure their are BYCers closer that may have some substitutes for your sons loss......

Well, well, well....that wasn't brought out in the a articles. ... and who else in town had chickens as well and has to get rid of them??? Honestly, they need a lawyer.

Hi,

I sent e-mail to all the city council and posted their e-mail adressed on this site, but I will post them again here. Never got a reply from any of them, and I sent a copy of Pinellas county ordinance that allows chickens here to give them a example, but as I said before no responce back from any of them. So sad :(

Well here are their e-mail addresses. Maybe some of you all will have better luck?

Possums are common in Florida and will only eat the heads. Maybe the family could consider getting a smaller bird that can be kept in a cage in the house. Keeping backyard chickens is risky because of disease, predators, mean neighbors, etc. I feel for the family and their loss. Death is a part of life but that is hard to explain to an autistic child. Just in case this has come across otherwise, my intention is to be sympathetic and to offer an alternative until the laws are changed. I hope the OP is not turned off and continues to use this site as a source of help and information.
