*UPDATE* Post #24 Sounds kinda like a yipping hyena?

Raccoons can get together and sound like they are growling/fighting with each other. They always just sound ornery! I am not sure when foxes mate, but this past spring I heard two foxes go on and on with each other. They are so stinkin' loud! All the dogs in the neighborhood were all riled up that night! That sounds different than their screaming woman call.

Came here to say that. They are pretty common in the suburbs and not unheard of in urban areas around where I am. Much more so than foxes, for sure. They have all sorts of unpleasant sounds like you're describing.

Coyote. When they get going nightly around here its the only thing my dogs don't react to. Who knows why, but I've never had a dog respond to coyote calls.

I'm guessing coyotes, too. The first time I heard them, they were yipping more like a pack of pomeranians! They yip, howl, and make several other sounds that I can't even begin to describe. And they DO live in urban areas also. My son attends college in St. Paul, MN and saw one a couple of weeks ago, crossing a big, busy, 4-lane highway near the school.

Cities, especially ones like Ann Arbor (been there, used to live in Pinckney) with lots of parks and green space, are havens for wildlife, including foxes and coyotes. Most people just don't see them, since they are very secretive and adept at living under the radar. When I lived in Milwaukee, downtown no less, there was a pair of foxes I'd see nightly when working a night shift job. Healthy animals who knew how to dodge cars and get plenty to eat for themselves and their kits. Actually, cities provide better food sources then the countryside. People are filthy, always leaving half eaten food trash about or pet foods outside. Easy pickings for any wild animal.

Just because they havent been seen doesnt mean they are not around. People often mistake them for dogs, German Shepards usually. The whole yipping thing makes me want to say coyote. Thats a sign of a kill and they are calling the other pack members. I had a pack get a cottontail rabbit outside my house one night. Woke me from a dead sleep, talking sleeping like a parked tank sleep. I jumped grabbed my shotgun and a flashlite and all I could find was rabbit hair. So I would be on the lookout and maybe get a trailcam to see if they are perusing the area at night.

Of course, given that you're in Ann Arbor, it could be some Wolverines from U of M celebrating yesterday's win. :)
