Ok, there's three levels of formal in the South.

Mr./Mrs. LastName: teachers, strangers, etc. This is the highest level of formality.

Mr./Miss FirstName: Sunday School teachers, elders that aren't family to whom you want to show respect and honor. A future mother/father in law would fall into this category. These are informal and friendly relationships, but you're still respectful of an age difference or authority status.

FirstName: Intimate relationships between non-relatives of roughly the same age.

I've had someone to tell me not to call her ma'am, but in the end I had to ask for her forgiveness because it was literally beaten into me. Respect your elders........

PS, a senator has a short shelf life, a Brig Gen has spent the better part of a lifetime getting there. She needs to back down and give some respect.
