Yeah, same thing here. Down south it seemed to imply "woman of
the house" when placed in front of her first name.

MISS doesn't mean she has had kids though. Just never married. Right?

Ok, there's three levels of formal in the South.

Mr./Mrs. LastName: teachers, strangers, etc. This is the highest level of formality.

Mr./Miss FirstName: Sunday School teachers, elders that aren't family to whom you want to show respect and honor. A future mother/father in law would fall into this category. These are informal and friendly relationships, but you're still respectful of an age difference or authority status.

FirstName: Intimate relationships between non-relatives of roughly the same age.

I love it.

I've had someone to tell me not to call her ma'am, but in the end I had to ask for her forgiveness because it was literally beaten into me. Respect your elders........

PS, a senator has a short shelf life, a Brig Gen has spent the better part of a lifetime getting there. She needs to back down and give some respect.

Correct but by calling her miss you imply that her son is, uh, illegitimate.

Miss has nothing to do with marital status, it's just a sign of respect. ETA: In the South.

Now you know I adore you, most of the time dear, but this one you're wrong on. The lady has a preferred form of address you use it, even if it's "Sheeba queen of the rabid succubi", manners say you adress someone in ther perferred form.
