The way I think of it a hen won't start sitting on her eggs until they've been laid and this could be about 12 eggs depending on the size of the hen so 8 days + maybe 1 or 2 days isn't too bad but yeah someone mentioned the storing conditions they were in could have an affect, as well as how they were handled en route

My hen has laid over 20 eggs and possibly still laying more! I don't think chickens are supposed to wait until all eggs are deposited then 'set'...... if they did that, 20 + days will probably leave a few of the early ones dead which makes no sense in the laws of nature and preserving one's lineage. They will lay maybe 10 to 12 eggs and then set on it, whatever eggs that will still deposit gets dropped and set immediately along with the initial batch of eggs which will give you 1 day or so staggered hatches from the last few eggs.

they usually stop laying once the broody hormones set in so yes about a dozen eggs, about 6-8 if bantam

Ducks are more likely to make a nest and not sit on it until they have “enough” eggs. Chickens just rotate out the older eggs and don’t cover them as closely when they are first making their nest. This way they hatch in succession. Not really staggered, more one at a time, but close together.

Here’s some updating pictures for day 7 canceling. Three I had to throw away (no life, or died early) and I have 3 still in the incubator. I’m still hopeful that I may get something out of this batch!

One saddle looks pretty drastic, but I bet it will hatch ok.

I once had a Langshan, it was my favorite standard chicken. Tall, sleek black feathers, with a green sheen if I remember correctly (it was about a decade ago), mysterious eyes and calm. Such a sophisticated bird. I thought it was a rooster because of its large and slightly red comb so I rehomed it to a guy who was buying a couple hens because he asked about it and I wasn't allowed to have roosters. He let me know later on that it was a hen

That was in California, now I've moved to frozen north and will be getting bantam Brahmas and Wyandottes (pea and rose combs, fluffy coats) in the next few years

Good luck! You might think about leaving them be until you get ready to set them for lock down. The less I mess with shipped eggs the better they seem to do. I really hope they hatch for you!

That is probably usually the case. On a unique circumstance my first ever hatch in 2003 was with 2 dozen bantam eggs from Ideal Poultry (1 dozen assorted bantam cochin and 1 dozen bantam special) back when they sold hatching eggs. The eggs were shipped from TX to California. I was so excited about them that I candled them every day and all 24 hatched.

2 Dark Brahma, a lavendar d'Uccle, some other d'Uccles including Porcelain and Mille Fleur, 2 red Frizzles, a white cochin, 2 partridge cochins, a buff cochin, a birchen cochin, the rest I can't remember. They all got attacked by raccoons except a white cochin rooster and a partridge cochin hen. Then animal control took them because the rooster crowed even though I was allowed the hen but I let them go together anyway, hopefully they got adopted together.

Anyway most of the eggs had detached air cells but made it just fine.

Today I woke up and found one baby croad had hatched and another pipped! Yay!!!
