I'm just gonna say this: I hardly ever get sick, but I react really badly to vaccines. I still get them of course, because I believe it's importan, but after my tetanus shot I couldn't use my arm for 3 days, the pain was so bad.
On the other hand, I am touched that the OP posted this. They believe it, so they are trying to protect us. THey aren't getting paid for this!SO take a moment to say Thank you very much-whether or not you think it's a threat.

Is this going to be like the stories on Eggbid? The balloons are filled with dog breath...

You know, I was thinking about it... as much as I'd like to get swine flu on the first go around and NOT the second go around, if I DID get this balloon, I don't know if I could really and truly bring myself to breathe from it or whatever you have to do. Picture opening a box mailed from someone you don't know, and the balloon is supposed to have swine flu in it. Could you really and truly breathe from it? I'm getting the willies thinking about it. I bet it would sit on my counter for 3 months. Then I'd find the kids playing with it.

The question is who can get me an infected ziplock full of germs before they die?? It looks like they only live 24-48 hours on any given non-porous surface.

From James M. Steckelberg, M.D.

The length of time that cold or flu germs can survive outside the body on an environmental surface, such as a doorknob, varies greatly. But the suspected range is from a few seconds to 48 hours — depending on the specific virus and the type of surface.

Flu viruses tend to live longer on surfaces than cold viruses do. Also, it's generally believed that cold and flu viruses live longer on nonporous surfaces — such as plastic, metal or wood — than they do on porous surfaces — such as fabrics, skin or paper.

Although cold and flu viruses primarily spread from person-to-person contact, you can also become infected from contact with contaminated surfaces. The best way to avoid becoming infected with a cold or flu is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water or with an alcohol-based sanitizer.

I think I'm going to go hang out at my Dr.'s practice...or find out which town has the most cases around here...they are so secretive about it!

Update:

My son is completely recovered.

My daughter has it, but she got it from somewhere else since she never came around him. She is a cashier. She tested positive, so the doctor prescribed Tamiflu. It worked wonderfully! Even though she didn't have it until day 4. She is much better. This is a relief since she has an autoimmune disease and takes medicine to suppress her immune system.

The rest of us were at a family reunion last weekend where we were exposed again to an active case. My cousin tested positive the Monday after, and was coughing at the reunion. My little kids played with him for two days. So far, so good, but they're not out of the woods yet. We are keeping them both quarantined just in case so they won't spread it. I hope they get it before school starts in 12 days if they get it at all.

So, how many times have I been exposed? Can you get a light case? I had a scratchy throat for a few hours one day.

Anyway, it seems like you can't escape. I'm glad it's not a really bad strain.

My Grandfather was born in 1900. Joined the military in 1918. His WHOLE family except for him all died from the flu pandemic. He had to be sent home to make arrangements for his whole family. He never became sick.
My father tried to bring the subject up to my grandfather many times. He wouldn't really talk about it. He would go to the grave sites with my grandfather every saturday to keep the graves neat and tidy. He said even though my grandfather never officially spoke to him about it, he figured it out on his own. All our families grave stones had the around the same dates of death, and he did a little research. Some other family members from my grandmothers side had some information as well.
I'm refuse to panic about this, and I really don't think it will be as bad as the media portrays it. I've never personally had the flu in any form ever, and neither has my father. I've never had a flu shot, and I'm not going to start now.
