VERY important relevant SWINE FLU information. PLEASE listen.

The problem with that theory is that the people will actually have to have the flu, to get the meds (tamiflu). It wont just be hype...

Actually, there is a vaccine (Canada just ordered 50.2 million doses - for a population of about 30 million). Vaccines are produced by pharmaceutical companies. Seems to me that in order to convince people to vaccinate, one needs to get them good and scared.

Personally, I don't have any underlying health issues, I'm not preggers and I am careful about hand washing and touching my face, so I'm quite happy to skip this vaccine.

I just wanted to add something. Yes the media does tend to really play up things like the bird flu, swine flu etc. Yes the swine flu or any other could potentially become a pandemic. But I truly believe that it's the media's hyping it up that saves us from having a pandemic. Yes everyone freaks out and by doing so they all take extra precautions to avoid getting whether it be from getting the vaccine, using masks, washing hands religiously , disinfecting etc. I think that the pandemic happened in the early 1900's because they didn' t have the media to play it up and broadcast all over so all those that died back then didn't die b/c of ignorance but rather because the media venue wasn't as widespread as it is now. They didn't have the internet, they didn't have tv's all they did have was newpaper and the radio.
I homeschool my kids' as well and more than likely won't get the swine flu vaccine. I will stock up on plenty of tea tree oil, manuka oil and a few other 'home remedies', herbs that we have relied on over the years to help us through the 'flu' months, not to mention some good ole' fashioned chicken noodle soup with a touch of garlic!.

Hey, you know what would do a LOT to cut down on the spread of any flu whatsoever?

Unlimited paid sick days from work. Seriously. Except most American employers will never, never do it.

With all due respect, I'm guessing you have never been an employer and had the pleasure of paying people you knew were lying to you. Or better yet, caught them in the act.

Only because we live in a fog and don't start thinking until panic sets in. Maybe there's a vaccine for that.

It's almost certain that this is indeed something worthy of notice. Panic no, notice yes. New strains of old viruses are going to pop up and going to be spread around the world. New viruses (or as of yet undiscovered) will show up. That's just how it is. Nature will always find a way.

Now, what are some of the more sinister implications of this one, ones that have come before (anyone remember AIDS), and most importantly, the ones to come?

Its very likely that man made mutations are among us. Does anyone here put it past human nature NOT to experiment with genetic and viral weaponry and subsequently cover up any accidental releases that may have happened? I sure don't. Man isn't that noble. Heck, a release could be part of the experiment if you ask me.

It is also equally likely that man will exploit viruses that mutate naturally (doing things the easy way) : use the fear they cause to elicit a response that provides both more profits to corporations and more authority to govt. organizations .

Its up to us to NOT panic, keep a clear mind, and determine for ourselves (with some education of course) what the best course of action should be.

If it feels like you are being steered down a chute you probably are.

Yes, the penalties for being sick are rather onerous. If you have sick kids it's terrible. Most day cares require you to take your child home which is as it should be, but you still have to pay for the time. Then you have to stay home to take care of them. Double whammy. Most employers are suspicious of you. Best thing to do is call them up and throw up while your saying your sick. Of course when I was younger I did call in a few times when I wasn't sick.

By the way. I heard a press briefing where they said that the inoculations would not be mandatory. There's a good chance there will not be enough doses and it will be offered on a priority basis only.

If it were not for the liars in the world it would not be an issue. You should talk to them. They ruined it for everyone.

PS: I use liar and lawyer pretty much interchangeably.

I agree with the posters who say this is a concern, but not a huge issue YET. Everyone should be on guard and do their best to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.

I can't help anyone with the vaccine thing - I won't be taking it and I believe in vaccines - just not the flu vaccine. If I were sick, old, or in some way compromised I *might* take the vaccine. But right now, I'm none of those things.
