well she is about the same..... she did seem to have a bit more energy then earlier but ???? I dont know..anyway she is pooping watery brown now...( well more like a very deep dark green brown)... I bought some baby food banana and berry added a tiny bit more antibiotic and tried to get it in her not sure how much she actually got because i mixed it with the baby food and there is still some left in the cup....... she just wasnt letting me give it to her ... and i didnt want to push her too hard... she seems to be panting its not hot about 80 and breezy i felt in her bin it was comfy not hot her feet feel very warm but her body isnt .. her beak was open and she was breathing through her mouth not all the time but some of it ... going back to be with her ill be back later

If her comb is drained of color, if she's panting, if she's got her eyes closed most of time, if she isn't moving, etc, etc.

It's time.

In June, I had one of my favorite hens do all this. It never ends well. No, I didn't do a necropsy, but I know internal disease and reproductive ascites and peritonitis when I see it. It was so hard to see her suffering. In mercy, I ended it. Had to. She's been returned to the earth from whence she came. That's her on left. When I took this photos, I first noticed the fluid swelling. Within days, she was in a very bad way.

None of this is easy, but sadly, it is also far too common with the modern birds. It just is and it is sad.

So glad to hear she is hanging in there....just got back from a dr. appointment and logged on right away to see how you and she were doing!

I've only done an internal vent check one time, but didn't find anything out of the ordinary. First do as thorough an external check as you can. Get a flashlight and part the feathers and see what you see. Hold up her tail or have someone else hold her. If you see nothing, put on a disposable glove if you have some, lubricate your finger with olive oil and gently insert your index finger up to the first knuckle and see if you feel anything. Be fully prepared she may poop on you.

I have had hens with sour crop and impacted crop, and we also had to deal with internal egg laying in my favorite hen. I learned to give her an injection of antibiotic (I hate needles!); she would get better for awhile, but it would always eventually come back. I also drained fluid from her. After months of this I finally had to end her life because I couldn't bear to see her suffer anymore. That was very hard but I feel I did the right thing.

Keep us posted! You are doing all you can and you obviously care about your animals. Stay calm and take care of yourself so you can care for her and the others!

I have been in tears all day watching her and fighting along side her ..I put her down in some grass in the lawn but she just stood there so i waited a minute and then placed her back in her bin ... I did the vent check there wasnt anything we could feel .. I cant bring myself to end her life I thought I would be able to if the time came but I cant.. nature as crule as some may think will have to take its course I dont have it in my being to end a life (Again another reason I wish i was brought up on a farm) Im sure this would have been second nature to just put an animal out of its suffering .. I hope I dont make people think less of me for it but I just cant do it.....

so for now my goal is saving grace

looking at these pictures and looking at me holding her in my profile pis you can really see the color change in her ... so sad such a sick baby ... that was just 2 days ago too

My little girl Gracey just ate =) .... my son had a vienna sausage i smushed it up with the baby food and tried to get her to eat some from the cup ..she wanted nothing to do with it at all then as I was trying to get the cup up out of the pen some spilled out she ate it !!! so I gave her more she continued to eat approx. half a teaspoon !! the most I have seen her eat in over three days !!!! yey !!! she also seems more alert and actually got fiesty when i tried to give her more antibiotic .... I dont want to get too excited she is still pale and is still panting but her eyes are wide open and she is acting curious again looking around the pen and even followed a fly that came by to steal some sausage =)
