Hey guys I've been watching this post and hearing all of the good news of pipping and peeping and zipping and chirping I decided to go to the coop to look under my broodies. Well I am in the night of day 17 and when I was candeling egg #1 I heard a little peep and some scratching and pecking inside the egg. I am so excited!
Does this mean egg 1 is further along than 17 days or can the peep sooner than day 19?

HB&B...........it has to be farther along if you heard peeping. They don't peep until they break through the air sac.

I went to check on everyone, and make sure all the babies were warm and toasty under mama hen, and a wet little head poked out. So I now have 5 hatched - 3 more to go!

I didnt hear peeping on any of the others. How soon after peeping do they normally hatch? I hope she waits for the others to hatch if this one comes extra early... everyone

for me

Oh and I have to say that I've hatched in an incubator, but this is my first time under a broody. It is so sweet to see the babies with a mother hen. (technically she's a pullet, but since she's hatched babies, she's earned the right to be a hen

) They are so much more content than babies I've hatched in my incubator. I'm amazed by this experience. And it's been really funny to see the window shoppers (other hens) curiously checking out the babies in the nursery. (protected area of the coop for the broody) Even the roosters have been getting in on the action, curious to see what's up.

I have 5 babies and 2 eggs int the box cooking off. One of the eggs is too full to see anything but the other had a little sliver of light through it and there was movement.

I was expecting 6 babies when I went to work yesterday afternoon but when I got home a little after midnight I found 5 babies and 1 empty shell (from the 5th baby). No 6th baby. No shell from the 6th baby. No sign that there was ever a 6th egg! Im praying it wasnt a snake. If im having predator issues then I stand to miss more chicks. If im missing anyone when I get home tonight then im gonna move momma and babies to a safer place for a while.
Ive noticed that this same chick is always under SFCs wing looking out. Cute little peep.

Congrats to everyone! This is the most fun ive had with chickens in a long while. Something about fluffy babies...

Here's my whole hatch. My broody hatched all 8 eggs. Can't beat a 100% hatch rate.

I ended up with 2 blues, 2 blacks, and a chipmunk (upper right) olive egger. The other 3 chipmunks are either pure Welsummers or Welsummer/Olive egger crosses.
