I wish I knew how to tan hides.
Silkie,
Hi y'all! The very least you can do is, skin the raccoon and toss the innards. the hide can then be sprinkled with an amout of curing salt. Morton's Tender Quick is fine and easily available. WARNING:Make sure you wash your hands and wrists down with Betadyne and wear Nitrile or some similar heavy non-latex rubber gloves. Raccoon habitat often includes habitat of the rabies carrying flea; proper sanitary handling procedures must be observed since the rabies antigen(present in the hemoglobin) is highly contagious. Use same procedure,in reverse, when cleaning yourself and dispose of all perishable items in a bio-hazard bag. Non-perishable items, such as knives, stainless steel tables and sinks, tongs and impervious flooring must be sterilized either by chemical solution or water@212F held for 20 minutes minimum.
Or to HELL with it and chuck the raccoon and enjoy your yardbirds like we all do!
All y'all take care!
