Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi Mike

If its injury it's possible to get better with treatment. If its mareks she will get worse. If they all came from the same place all the birds will have been exposed but not all may show symptoms or get sick. That splayed leg hurdle jumping pose is pretty classic mareks like turtlpower mentioned. Usually it's not got to bring in other birds once you've had something like mareks. I don't know if its the same if you are making sure you are getting vaccinated birds and mixing them in.
It's heartbreaking to watch. All we can do as chicken peeps is push to have our birds vaccinated or buy vaccinated stock. It's a learning process for all so us. That's why we are here, right?

oh i see. wow :/ what kind of chance do the other 3 hen's have then?

The only way to know for sure is to send bodies in after death for a Necropsy. Since this is a sudden onset, I assume, of the leg issue it is likely an injury. Marek's is a progression, you would notice lack of toe/foot use first before legs are affected. Can you feel the tendon and trace it up from bottom of foot to the knuckle joint, it should line up in middle of the knuckle

yup def a learning process. man this sucks. :'( will probably lose them all then. only had a few hens to begin with. have lost a few others along the way, when they were only a couple days old too. i do everything by the book as well but never good enough and never good enough as a mother hen could be. *huge siiiiiiiiiiigh* kids are going to be heartbroken as well. I was trying to support local farmers instead of buying from the feed store :/ *upset*

There are different types of the mareks vaccine. The one that is done at the hatchery prevents the disease. I don't know of any proof that breeding provides adequate immunity to mareks or passes sufficient antibodies. Vaccines that breeder and fanciers have access to dont do much in the way of protection.

I have to disagree with this statement. The vaccine makes it IMPOSSIBLE to know if your flock carries Marek's without a Necropsy because symptoms never show in vaccinated birds. But they can still carry and spread the disease. This is how those of us that don't vaccinate know if a bird is affected or not.

Cocci= bacteria. Coccidia=internal parasite.
And you may not lose more. It's hard to say what's actually going on so we will hope for the best :) lots of love and spoil them rotten

She was sleeping in my lap :) She was upset being in the cage and if it is injury didn't want her to make it worse.
