I'm obsessively checking my email for tracking and already anxious waiting for the little ones. Finishing the brooder setup tonight with kiddo and assembling a chick roost I found for a great deal. Just filling time until we get our little peeps!

We have buckets of rain coming down.
Birds will do dirt baths in the coop today!

I am so itching to get new chicks. but you've said better to wait until May. Does anyone occasionally find an egg under the roosts? I have found 2 in the past week. What does/could this mean? Out of 5 nesting boxes, the 8 girls only use 2, mostly 1. Should I check something or them? Finally got tomatoes started. Decided that cherry tomatoes are a waste of time, since we don't eat many, and I make mostly sauce with our romas, so that is what is going in this year. Paring down what I plant to what we actually eat the most of, and what I can can or freeze. Do any of you plant a row for your chickens? I am planting kale for them again. They don't like the kind much at all.

Has anyone used a Cozy panel heater for brooding? If so, how have you set it up?

Occasional eggs under the roost I don't worry about - either a hen couldn't hold it over night, or you have a new layer or a bird coming in (or out) of lay that's struggling with the system temporarily.

Do any of you plant a row for your chickens? I am planting kale for them again.

I don't, but they're generally happy to eat whatever leftovers I don't - split tomatoes, greens that are maybe a little wilted or too buggy for me to want to wash off, carrot tops, etc.

I had a lot of soft-shelled roost eggs when the gals first started laying, now, I find them all over the place when the 4 nest boxes are all full at the same time and someone else "just can't wait". Today I found one sitting by their pop door.

We had like 4 inches of rain today

No clue how many inches we got, but we went from a pretty low creek level to water going over the bank in several sections, sigh.
