Made mayo for the first time using egg yolks from today's eggs! Turned out pretty good. And it'll be perfect on my BTTs I'm making for supper.
BTT = Bacon, Turnip Greens and Tomatoes
With homemade bread, of course!
I pulled all the turnips up out of my garden. The roots are in terrible shape because of worms or some other pest, but I got bunch of turnip greens! I went to the trouble of blanching them, and ended up with 6 bags, each with over 1 cup of greens. They're in the freezer now.
Guess I'll chop up the turnip roots and throw them in the chickens' day run. They won't eat them, but it'll add to the compost. Or maybe I should chop them and cook them, worms and all. The chickens might eat it then.
I guess the turnip greens are backup, because I have 18 red Russian kale plants growing in the garden, and they're doing good. I really like this variety. Bugs don't bother it at all, and it survived through the entire winter. Even after going through temps in the teens, the leaves perk back up and can be picked and eaten. Just have to protect them from the chickens and deer.
I also finished filling another gallon bag with tomatoes, so I have 2 gallons in the freezer for this winter so far. I need to go out and pick more today. Saw a lot that were ripening and ripe.
Five eggs so far today, and no soft shells under the roost.
Just picked these tomatoes, probably another 2 gallons for the freezer. And there are many, many more green ones still in the garden.
The plants seem to be doing fine, even though I haven't watered them for weeks. No wilting during the heat of the day. I guess the lawn clipping mulch I used around them works really well.
I'm a little hesitant to let the chickens out to forage in the yard now. Late last night, or early this morning I heard a few coyotes yipping and howling nearby. And from what I've read, a coyote can do a lot of damage to a flock in a short amount of time. Maybe I should babysit my chickens with a shotgun in my hands. LOL
One of my girls made me a proud chicken daddy this morning. Don't know who laid it, but I'm impressed! First egg that weighed in at over 100 grams! The previous record was 94 grams.
