Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I think you would be a wonderful 4-H Poultry leader. If there was anything you didn't know already, you of course, have wonderful resources readily available to you! Do it.
X 2 And it would give you something to do since you are so unbusy !!!!!!

Getting together with kids will also get you together with parents, and there maybe alot of folks out there that could help you out as well !
Go for it !!!!!!

Gotta go~~~~~~~~~~~~~Chicken math is calling.

Yup, no barnie babies this year. There are 3 girls left and the roo is fine, so perhaps better luck next spring. First time the 'bator let us down. Oh well.

Glad Betsy is doing well. I'm keeping fingers crossed we can get the hatchrite fixed so we can get lots of new Barnvelders in the spring - and some Cornveleders too!

I'll keep you posted. (I owe you one)

Cornvelders? Educate me!

Nahhh!!! You definitely don't owe me any at all!
By the way... my granddaughters ended up trading two young EE roos (the ones they originally thought to be girls) to someone locally for 2 EE pullets. Well, one is setting and should have little peepers very soon, and the other one (much younger) is growing a very pretty long tail and spurs!!! Her name is Penny, soon to be renamed to Paul! Those kids just can't seem to get a break on the he/she game!

Luckily they're really good sports about it. And they're really excited about having chicks, it's the first time. The roo was probably a bantam silkie and momma's a large EE, so the chicks will be pretty interesting I think.

YES !!!
DH and I were just saying that very thing, barely 2 weeks ago we were roasting & so worried our wells would go dry !
Fires were everywhere...thank goodness for rain !!!!!!!!!!!

But doesn't it seem like it was suuuuuuucccccccccccchhhhhhhhh a Loooooooooong summer, summer forever, then POW it is winter ?
Well, it seems that last winter, it simply stopped one day and was spring for a couple of days, then that stopped and it was summer. Then just recently summer stopped and winter started. I looked out one morning and the leaves were all over the ground and what a mess!

Hope you get the roof on soon. I haven't read all the prior posts - are you living in the built part while you finish up the rest, or still living in the tool shed?

Cornevelders are a cross between Cornish and Barnvelders. The dark Cornish has plumage a lot like the barny (females anyway) so the Cross is very pretty, plus the big breast of the Cornish. I like the Cornish look - the lack of comb and wattles gives them a raptor look to them. The males look similar to the females but are bigger, so the Barnevelder gives them a more "roo'ish" look to the boys.

Those sound like they will be very interesting chicks indeed. Can't wait to see pics.

It's interesting that your son wishes his skin color was different?? Does he think that would change his culture?? Just curious? I watch a TON of PBS and they have from time to time documentary on the World Wars, and the Nazis etc. I get so caught up and upset about how devastating and unbelievably grizzly the events were, I start to ball!

I think it is just a "I feel different" than the rest of my class and/or friends situation and wishes he fit in better. He just turned 8. He doesn't know much history. We've taught him some, but we don't get into things that could cause nightmares - particularly because my oldest is an extreme worry wart. And, as soon as he is worried about something, we can't get him off the topic. We have to be careful with news, etc. because he takes things so literally and becomes worried that world news, or world history is right here, right now and ready to attack him.

Hmm, good idea, I don't know what a family group is? I will call her and see what she says! Thanks Ren!

A family group is where a family does 4-H activities together. A family group cannot do any fundraising - I believe that is the primary difference. She wanted me to pull in at least 1 other child from outside our family so we could do fundraising for our group, but, at this point, I'm not really interested in that. Right now, I want 4-H to be a family night. We'll see how it goes.

If you are willing and want to run a regular 4-H group, by all means, do! Many children will appreciate you for it. Many parents are so busy, they just can't do things like that on their own.

My chicken pop door opener is battery powered, recharged by a solar trickle charger. It works great! One of the best investments we've made for the coop. The trickle charger is supposed to keep the battery charged, and supposedly, if the solar panel was disconnected from the charger for some reason, it should take about 4 months for the battery to run low.
Velvet and itsren - (and any more as I have only read 2 posts) -
Thanks for the auto pop door info. May I ask what brands, where you got them and about what I may expect to pay? Sounds like I may be able to go solar after all if the charge holds for 4 months!

Also thanks for the sports team info - looks like the closest one is in Covington which might be do-able.
