Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I don't think I will ever stop being startled by "Dead Chicken Syndrome". You know, you go out to the chicken yard and there is a carcass seemingly rotting in the sun, with a leg sticking out, wing partially unfolded, head up against a rock with a twisted-looking neck. When you are just about ready to start screaming, they open their eyes. Just sunbathing. Gets me every time!
Isn't that the truth! I did have one chicken die, I think from the heat, and I found her one afternoon. Ever since then I freak out whenever my chickens are laying like that.

I am use the girls on on their side ahve a very large fan in the coop I run when it is hot put ice in their water but they do dust bathes in the deep litter mixed with ground they dug up so it isnt uncommon I clean the coop daily but will do it later for them having fun

Well, the flock is 3 birds fewer. And 11 pounds of meat resting in the fridge. The prolapsed hen was in really bad shape. Being unable to poo normally, her fecal matter had backed up into her crop. Poor thing. She would have been dead by tomorrow morning anyways.

I'm sorry. It always sucks when you have to make the choice of what is kinder. I never like doing it, but it's the best choice sometimes.

I lost a 7 year old hen last week. She wasn't doing the best and I knew it was likely. She died in her sleep peacefully. I have a few more old girls I'm watching carefully.
