My mom just called. She contacted a company up here that sells and installs nice wood burning stove inserts. They paid for one FOR US! They're installing Friday. Um...WOWZA! Thanks mom and dad, I'm so excited to be warm in the house again! We can't afford to have the heat higher than about 66 all winter and I'm always cold. Not anymore! They also said they'd pay for our first cord of wood! Free heat for the winter = awesomeness!
Do ya know what brand? Also JUST in case you don't already know. A cord of firewood is 4' x 4' x 8' = 128 cubic feet tightly stacked and nothing less. Also I hope you aren't expecting 1 cord to last all winter. Unless you don't plan to burn a fire often.
Thanks Dave! It looks a bit awkward. Do you think someone with limited strength could fill and turn it back over without drenching oneself?
Looking at the water-er. We have some just like that but NOT heated and DW can deal with them. If she can do it most anybody can.

CR - yup, I grew up with wood burners and know all about them and how to burn. We plan on 3 cords for the winter, with some left over probably. Our upstairs is all we'll heat and it's only 1,400s/f approx. The bedrooms won't be heated well this way so we'll technically only be heating the great room and deal with cold bedrooms because we all like to sleep cold

The basement has its' own wood burner but it's terribly old and inefficient so we don't use it. Basement is DHs office only and he'll use a small space heater if necessary. I think it's gonna work out great! Can't wait boil us out of the upstairs for a few days while I break it in!!

It will be so nice not to have to wear double socks and a sweatshirt over my sweaters every day, along with lined jeans.

As for the birds, yes I know I need to treat everyone. I totally had no clue that the "poopy" looking butts was from critters! Eeew!

I've been holding them and snuggling them for weeks with what looked like barely poopy butts. I thought they were just getting a little poo caked on them each time they pooped. Bleh. Oh well, now I'll treat them and clean out the coop and be set for winter hopefully. I plan to use Sevin dust in the coop along with DE since I don't have Permethrin. I'll sprinkle those on top of new shavings as well. Hopefully that'll do the trick.

Does anyone do this? After the initial quarantine period is over, move only 1 bird from your existing flock over to live with the new birds for a while and see if the bird from your existing flock gets sick?

I'm tempted to do this with Rhodie. Quarantine the new birds for 30 days, and during that time get the 2nd coop/run done. THEN, move Rhodie in with the new birds and see what happens. Oh, can you imagine? Rhodie will instantly drop to the bottom of the flock order.

Yes, I know... a little mean of me. But, I've never said I was always nice.
