We have to get rid of our chickens!

Quote:
Having poultry in a residential zone. It is clear in the bylaw... my husband missed that part of the bylaw. I did, although, email the bylaw officer prior to getting chickens and inquired about getting them and he never responded so I assumed we were ok. He apologized for the oversight... I had some words for him about his oversight.

we all need to remember that if there are laws prohibiting livestock/chickens in a certain area, people who move to that area probably don't want to live around livestock/chickens.

I do understand your point and I can see how it would apply to me having a cow or even a rooster. Cows are large, have massive manure and can be a bit loud; roosters are loud and can even be a bit aggressive sometimes. These are 4 hens who barely make a peep and are clean and adorable. We are allowed to have 3 caged birds, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 rabbits, 3 of any rodent BUT NOT chickens. They are considered poultry and prohibited... this seems a bit ridiculous to me. To apply for a variance they want to charge me $500 and to get rezoned is even more expensive and requires a $2000. deposit. They make it nearly impossible to change things or make a case for yourself. We will battle this out. i have had 2 visits today alone from local media who are covering our story... hopefully we are able to make a difference or at the least spread the word and educate. The complainant used my BYC page to verify their complaint and a reporter asked me why I still leave up the page. Answer: It goes against everything I believe in. Raising Chickens is not something I am ashamed of or feel I should have to hide. Its about educating my children as well as others in the community and who may stumble across my blogs.

Fingers Crossed for Change!

News coverage? That should help! Just be careful not to bad mouth anyone. No one wants it to be messy.

We have been very respectful and simply arguing our cause. Its not about who complained but why we want to raise Chickens and why the law should be changed! Being spiteful will not get us anywhere.

Best wishes on a good outcome to your predicament. The world needs more people who will stand up for that they believe in & not be cowed by a dissenting neighbour. Yes, there are two sides to every situation, but chickens are far less noisy than dogs, car alarms, 4am garbage truck visits, etc. If you are a responsible keeper, which it appears you are, having a flock causes no harm to anyone.

(If you put your ladies in a cage for official visits can't they be considered "caged birds"? Even pigeons sometimes fall under the heading of "poultry". While the definition of poultry is domestic birds that are primarily kept for meat or eggs, this definition could fit a broad range of species in a variety of cultures.)

Maybe you can start a petition for a regional ballot measure.....or at least a fundraiser for financing a variance.

So sorry for your son. He was so attached to your chickens. And good luck on changing your laws in your city.

Ditto. Good for you for not backing down. I can't for the life if me figure out what people have against people which own chickens.
This post prompted me to remove my location as my town regulations changed "around" me over the years. I have lived in my house since before the town incorporated (over 40 years) and now we have a 2 chicken rule and NO ROOSTERS in town limits. I have searched the ordanices for grandfathering exceptions and can't find any.

Good luck to you, I will be following your blog

I can't figure out why it's okay to have a pet bird in a cage, when that bird provides nothing - but illegal to have a pet bird in an outdoor cage, when this bird provides sustenance to your family? Why the line between pets and producing animals? Should we not be encouraging people to be self sufficient? I understand if you're trying to raise large, smelly (manure) farm animals in a suburb - but a few chickens in a clean coop? I truly hope this works out for you, and shame on your sneaky/underhanded neighbor.
