We need your help-Got another letter from the town

Quote:
We keep the dogs out, one in the chicken pen, one next to the chicken pen, and the other one on the other side of the yard to keep coyotes, and racoons away. Knowing my dogs, they would probably bite someone if they came into our yard, especially my heeler, she means business. But I'll keep that in mind, I would be devastated if something happened to the dogs.

I know in one town we lived in the meter readers would get bit and the dog would have to be put down

even though the meter reader had entered your yard. I happened to see her come into my yard one day when my Heeler/GSD mix was out. She then left the gate open.

No wonder there were so many loose dogs once a month around town. I think she was a dog-hater. We tried really hard to make sure the dogs were put away in the house on that day. They wouldn't even knock on your door first to say they were there.

An option might be to padlock your gates. But then you'd always have to have your key with you. We resorted to this with one crazy landlord who thought it was her right to inspect the place once a week. She had to knock on our door to get into the yard to protect her from getting bit by our dogs that hated her. We didn't stay at that house for long. LOL

If she just left gates open I would call and report her or something, a dog could get out and get hit, or even a little kid could wonder out of the yard unknown. I have no idea when our meter reader comes, never saw them, but I think they come early in the morning when the dogs are in anyway.

If I recall correctly from my constitution class, if you have "posted" signs or whatever up, you can tell them to leave and they can't enter the premisis without a warrant issued by a judge.

I may be wrong.

I do believe that is correct.

Let me add my 2 cents worth....

First, actually read your town's ordinance so you're familiar with what it requires/or denies.

Edited for content BYC Rules
2. No PETA or Cock fighting posts, period!

Third, be honest in all that you say. If you eat the eggs, then admit it. Admit the birds are chickens.... you don't want to cause trouble, you want to work with the city in a genial, factual manner so that the council is willing to hear your side and respond. You want to know what their problem is with accepting chickens in the city and then do your best to satisfy them that all will be well.

And fourth, I absolutely would encourage you to get petitions signed, asap to help you change the ordinance. Most towns don't realize how 'okay' keeping chickens is with their constituents.

My advice is to talk to the officials involved, set up meetings with them individually, etc. Don't just take it into town meetings in public. They are elected officials and as such it is perfectly legal for members of the public to meet with them. If you have to, play golf together (that's how they usually do it!). Encourage these "deciders" to understand it's less intrusive than having a dog. And be nice and friendly about the whole thing. IMHO, that's the best way to get support to change the ordinances.

I didn't read through all 6 pages here so don't know if this was already covered.

This sounds like really great advice to me.
You know that we are here for you if you need us as well.
I'd add, which has been mentioned by others, gather lots of info on the benefits of local food. And proof that you show the birds. That can't hurt.
Your chickens will be part of your home schooling as well I'd imagine. Genetics among other subject matter.

Sounds like this would include rabbits, fish and other critters that people probably keep. More people who need to sign your petition

I’m much too lazy besides it sound like SeaChick has something similar going.

Great idea. This is information that a lot of us need.

I am so sorry that you are going threw this. I do not know much but, I would go to all of my neighbors get them on board. If all of your neighbors are on board its going to be that much easier.

Well I have barley any neighbors, the ones I do have, keep to themselves, don't talk at all, or are very friendly. Maybe a dozen fresh eggs would make them happy
